LESSON 1: TEST, MEASUREMENT, ASSESSTMENT, AND

EVALUATION
Testing A test is a tool comprised of a set of questions
administered during a fixed period of time under comparable
conditions for all students (Miller, Linn & Gronlund, 2009). It is
an instrument used to measure a construct and make
decisions.
Types of Tests According to Test Constructor
Standardized Tests Prepared by specialists who are versed
in the principles of assessment. Administered to a large group
of students or examiners under similar conditions.
Examples:
 College admission tests
 Board exams
 Psychological test
 International Compa
Non-standardized Tests Prepared by teachers. Usually
administered to one or a few classes to measure subject or
course achievement.
Types of Tests
High stakes testing a man-made test which utilized the test
results for important judgment or decision concerning the
following matters:
a. Students getting promoted to the next grade level A
b. Financial incentives for schools based on students test
performance on high- stakes test.
c. Principal and teachers being reassigned to other school as
promotion
d. Hiring employees/teachers in an organization
Diagnostic Test Knowing difficulties, strengths, and
weaknesses prior to instruction.
Placement Test Assess your particular knowledge or
capability in different subjects so as to assign you to fitting
courses or classes.
Proficiency Test Gauge your insight and capacity. (e.g.,
TOEFL for English language proficiency)
Achievement Test Assess if you are able to achieve the
course objectives.
Aptitude Test Evaluate your capacity, what you can do, and
what you can achieve in your learning to determine how well
you will perform in the future.
Measurement comes from the Old French word measure
which means "limit or quantity". Basically, it is a quantitative
description of an object's characteristic or attribute.
Types of Measurement
Objective Measurement Reveal the same results even when
done repeatedly
Impartial measurement.

Subjective Measurement Indicates measures concerning the


actual experience of an individual, his feelings or emotions,
and opinions that are commonly subject to disagreement.

Assessment is a process of collecting information about a


learner's performance using a variety of methods and tools.
Pertains to all 'activities undertaken by teachers and by their
students in assessing them elves - that provide information to
be used to modify the teaching and learning activities in which
they are engaged." (Black & Wiliam, 1998).
Assessment FOR Learning To find out if the intended
learning targets are achieved, and to address the gaps that
occurred during the learning process. Also known as
Formative Assessment.

Assessment AS Learning Employs tasks or activities that


provide students with an opportunity to monitor and further
their own learning. It involves metacognition and self -
reflection.

Assessment OF Learning To provide evidence of a student's


level of achievement in relation to curricular outcomes.
Provides the foundation for decisions on student's placement
and promote on. EXAM Also known as Summative
Assessments.

Authentic Assessments Involves the demonstration of the


student’s actual performance of what you have learned from
the class.

Traditional Assessments Generally, it refers to the written
test of the paper-and-pencil test.
Selected Response Constructed Response
 Multiple Choice  Short Answer
 Alternate Response  Completion
 Matching Type  Essay (Restricted
or Non-restricted)
 Problem Solving
Evaluation Comes in after the data has been collected from
an assessment task. Evaluation is the process of judging the
quality of a performance or course of action. Assessment data
is interpreted in order to make a sound decision.
