Social pressure is the influence exerted on an individual by peers, family, or society to conform to
certain behaviors, leading to affect their motivation, focus, and overall success in school. These pressures
can lead to stress, anxiety, and even depression, which can in turn affect a student's ability to focus,
learn, and perform at their best (Filade et al, 2019). Academic performance is influenced by factors such
as student's ability, motivation, effort, and instruction, as well as external factors like social pressures. As
elaborated by the article by Smith (2021), social pressure can have a detrimental effect on a student's
self-esteem and self-confidence, leading to a lack of belief in their abilities and efficiencies. A study
conducted at NU-Nazareth by Flores et al. (2022) has revealed the impact of social pressure on HUMSS
students. Students may feel pressure to conform to certain academic or social standards or to meet the
expectations of their peers, teachers, or families. This pressure can manifest itself in a variety of ways,
such as the need to conform to social norms, peer pressure to participate in activities, and even the
pressure to achieve academic success. These pressures can have both positive and negative effects on
HUMSS students.

The study highlights significant differences between private and government (Both English and
Bengali mediums) in Tripura University schools in terms of peer pressure and academic achievement.
Peer pressure and academic achievement are negatively correlated (Sarkar et. al 2022). In 227
government students of secondary school have cases of the impact of social pressure on academic
achievements, based on their survey the result revealed that the highest level of peer pressure on
academic achievement is an average total of 81 (35.68%) and the one with the smallest levels is the
extremely high levels of peer pressure. On the other hand, the study revealed that out of 173 private
school students, below average is the highest level of peer pressure a total of 32(18.50%) and 17(9.82%)
students are extremely low levels of peer pressure. Based on the data surveyed, the results obtained
were that peer pressure has more negative effects than positive effects.

Academic Performance and Peer Pressure Academic performance is one of the most significant
concerns for high school students. It is challenging for them to avoid pressure when studying to acquire
high grades. However, not only does studying put them under pressure, but their academic performance
is also linked to peer pressure. According to Muraina and Adewuyi (2017), academic performance was
significantly correlated with peer pressure. In summary, adolescents, especially students, are among the
most vulnerable and stressed age groups. They are more susceptible to educational stress, and peer
pressure, and encounter mental health issues. Although high rates of mental health issues caused by
various factors among Vietnamese high school students have been reported, seeking help from formal
sources remains uncommon.
