Personal Statement

Sucayono Tarban

I started involving myself in the business area since I was very small. My parents, both of
them, are farmers who live in a small village in Java Island, Indonesia. Working as farmers
did not give my family a wealthy life, we lived in a very simple way. This condition did not
allow my parents to send all their children to school. I was lucky enough to go to school
when my brothers and sister didn’t have that opportunity. In order to help my parents fulfill
our daily needs, I had to sell fish and shrimp that my father catches from the river at the
market near my village. From this point, I began to know and learn how to make money by
selling things.

When I was in the first year of my high school, my parents told me that they could not afford
my school tuition fee. As a result, I had to drop out from school since we were not able to
finance my study. Being out of school, gave me more time to work. I moved to Jakarta and
worked as a laborer in a food factory. A year after that, I tried to start my own business by
selling a consumer product called Tempe (soybean cake), and since then, I have tried to sell a
few different products such as chips, cake, and tofu, anything that can make money. I was
trying to develop my business in trading tofu when I decided to go back to school to continue
my study. After working hard for four years studying and working at the same time, I was
able to graduate from State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta in 2013. After
graduation, I became more serious about building a career in the entrepreneurship area and
provided job opportunities by and for myself. I created a small business which produced
Tempe chips where I could hire four people to help me in producing and marketing this
product. I always wanted to build a successful business and was fascinated by lots of
wonderful entrepreneurs who can provide people with jobs whether they are from Indonesia
or other countries. Therefore, I intend to apply to the Entrepreneurship program at University
College London so I can get deep knowledge about entrepreneurship that I can use to create
successful business in the future.

It is widely acknowledged that the education system in UK universities especially in

University College London is considered as one of the best systems in the world where they
can combine many ways of learning and methods into a very good learning system. Having
friends with different cultures from around the world while learning interesting subjects from
qualified experts like Dr David Chapman and Dr Simon Hulme who have been proven to be
leading scholars with long careers and experience in the entrepreneurship fields will help me
to significantly improve my knowledge and broaden my horizon. I want to join their classes
and get as many insights as I can.

In the future, I plan to build a successful business in Indonesia which can help create more
job opportunities. Aside from that, I also want to teach students in universities in Indonesia. I
want to spread the knowledge I get to Indonesian students so there will be more students who
are willing to create businesses after they graduate. I plan to create a business or
entrepreneurship center in the universities I teach and maximize its roles to encourage
students to be entrepreneurs so they can provide job opportunities for themselves and for
other people as well.

According to a theory, to become a developed nation, a country needs to have at least 2%

entrepreneurs of its total population. And according to the Central Agency on Statistics of
Indonesia, right now, Indonesia has around 1.5 %, so we still need a lot of people working in
this field. In addition, according to the Central Agency on Statistics of Indonesia, the number
of unemployed In Indonesia is around 7 million people in 2016. Those people desperately
need to work and create new businesses is one of effective alternatives to deal with the
problem. By studying this course, I believe that it will help me reach my main goals in the
fields of entrepreneurship and education.

I certainly hope that my purpose and passion for this study along with my academic
achievements and experiences in entrepreneurship makes me a suitable candidate to study the
Entrepreneurship program at your university. I look forward to gathering with remarkable and
dynamic people around the world and learning this interesting course at one of the best
universities on earth.
