QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)

a. Define the following terms as used in Control systems:


i. State variable
ii. State of dynamic system
iii. State vector
iv. State space (8 marks)
b. By inspection, identify both the order and the type of the following systems

c. Draw the circuit for electronic implementation of a PID controller and obtain
expressions for the proportional, integral and derivative gain constants
(6 marks)
d. A PID controller is inserted in series with a system having the transfer function

required to locate the closed loop poles at s = -2 and s = −2 ± √3 (10 Marks)

QUESTION TWO (15 MARKS)


a. Define the following terms as used in dynamic system control
i. Controllability
ii. Observability (6 marks)
b. The differential equation below describes a dynamic system

Where x is the output and the u is the input of the system respectively. For this system:
i. Express the system in state space
ii. Determine the eigenvalues of the system
iii. State with reasons whether system is stable or not (9 marks)

a. Explain the Ultimate Cycle method of PID tuning with aid of suitable illustrations.

b. Use the ultimate cycle method to determine the gains for a PID controller for the
following plant given by

a. Explain the merits and demerits of a proportional controller (7 Marks)
b. Consider the proportional control system in Fig Q5b. Given that k = 10, c = 5,
determine the gain constant kp such that the dumping factor of the closed loop system
ζ = 0:7071 and compute the time constant τ of the resulting closed loop system
(8 Marks)
