1. INTRODUCTION
This tutorial will guide you through the creation of un-structured mesh, Processing and post-processing of a 2D
flow over cylinder case in Workbench. The wake behind the cylinder and the Von Karman street at Reynolds
number = 10,0000 will be studied. The boundary layer at the cylinder is to be fully resolved by the first cell
with y + = 1 and Expansion factor 1.2. Diameter of cylinder D = 1m.

Inlet: U = 1.46 m/s; Tu = 5%: Turbulent length scale 𝑙𝑡 = 0.01 m

Top/Bottom walls: Stationary wall with zero shear stress
Cylinder: Stationary no slip wall
Outlet: P = 1 atm, Prel = 0 Pa; Tu = 5%; Viscosity ratio 𝜈𝑡 /𝜈 = 10
Fluid properties: air (Fluent Database), constant density
Turbulence Model: SST k-omega

The following image shows the basic geometry of the 2D flow over cylinder geometry.

3. OVERVIEW
The following are the tasks of the tutorial:
i. Prepare the geometry and do un-structured meshing in Design Moduler of Work Bench.
ii. Perform the steady and unsteady simulations with the SIMPLE solver and upwind discretization of the
second order. Use implicit time scheme in unsteady solution.
iii. Examine the results in post-processing.
iv. Make a video of the Von Karman Street.
v. Compare the results of steady vs unsteady type simulations.

4. SET UP & GENERAL GUIDLINES

i. It is highly recommended that you create a new directory to work in. Several files will be created and it
is much easier to find them later if they are all in a new directory.
ii. Note that the ANSYS set of programs (including CFX, Fluent and ICEM) are unable to read directory
names with space characters in them. This means that the name of the new directory and the path
leading to the new directory must not have any spaces.

5. STARTING THE PROGRAM

All Programs → ANSYS 16.0 → Workbench 16.0

Or

Search in the run tab with keyword “Workbench” and open it. Firstly Workbench launcher will be opened. Left
click “Fluid Flow” and drag it into the main window:

Analysis Type: 2D

Double click “geometry” to open the DesignModeler

Prepared by: Dr.-Ing. Usman Allauddin Page 4

Some general names for different parts of the DesignModeler window will be used to help identify where
certain commands are found. These are all labeled in the following image:

6. PRE-PROCESSING
6.1 Geometry Preparation
i. Left click on XY plane in “Project Tree Outline”, then right click XY plane and select “Look at”:

v. Project Tree Outline → Sketching → Dimensions → Vertical:

V3: To give Horizontal dimensions, first click x-axis and then the top extreme horizontal edge of the
rectangular geometry, drag it to any suitable location and left click to come out from this option to give
horizontal dimension “V3”

V4: To give Horizontal dimensions, first click x-axis and then the bottom extreme vertical edge of the
rectangular geometry, drag it to any suitable location and left click to come out from this option to give
horizontal dimension “V4”
