Better future with Biotechnology

Exons 2008 - Biotechnology expo organised by the
Biotech Club of Sankara of Sri Sankara Senior Secondary
School was held for two days on Nov. 3 and 4, 2008.
The expo was inaugurated by Dr.Sultan Ahmed Ismail,
Soil biologist, Director of Ecoscience Research
Foundations and HOD of Biotech dept, New college,
Chennai.
The principal Smt.Subala Ananthanarayanan,
welcomed the chief guest. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Ismail gave
a keynote address on ‘Biotechnology-Promises and Perils’
which was an eye opening session for students and after
that presentation, the chief guest released the biotech
magazine ‘Shrishti - Genesis of a new era’ published by
Amritha of class 11, explaining the ground water contamination model.

Residential art camp Nov 15, 16

A residential camp on painting, sculpture, clay

modelling and wheel pottery for the children in the age
group 8 to 12 years will be held at DakshinaChitra. The
camp will also have yoga sessions and other traditional

received the first copy of the magazine.
A presentation elaborating various streams of
biotechnology taken up in Exons 2008 was presented by
Ananthanarayan of Class 12. Students displayed models
and charts covering various disciplines of biotechnology
like Clinical microbiology and explained on Effect of neem
on wound infections, pathogenesis of HIV, Cholera,
Amoebiasis and microbial toxins.
Biochemical characterisation of microbes,
differentiation of bacterial cell walls, Actinomycetes were
also explained. In Immunology, topics covered were
transplantation, types of allergic reactions, protocol for
plant genome DNA and Protein and DNA bands were
shown to students.

A festival to
celebrate children
Just not a day but a whole month is devoted to children
to bring out their talents to the open.
NalandaWay Foundation, a creative media NGO that
works with low-income, marginalised children and help
them overcome challenges to do extra-ordinary things.
They are organising a children’s festival, ‘Art, arattai,
aarpattam’. The event is held in partnership with UNICEF
between November 14 and December 7, 2008.
During the festival, NalandaWay children’s group will
perform street plays in various parks across the city.
Children mentored by the wellknown artist and art
director Thotta Tharani will express their ideas through
art, illustrations and messages. Graffiti will be painted by
children on the outer wall of the US Consulate, Chennai
on November 29 and 30.
There will be a concert by the NalandaWay Children’s
Music Band on November 15, at 7 pm. At Sir Mutha
Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall, Lady Andal School
premises. The children performing in the concert have
been rescued from bonded labour, slavery and trafficking.
Popular drummer Sivamani will participate in this event.
A mobile audio recording booth will travel across the
city schools, communities, public spaces, and residential
complexes and children can share ideas on how to keep
their streets, homes and the city clean and safe.
There are also Story telling and Story writing
competitions for school children in partnership with AID
India and Growing Opportunity.
