Instructions to students:
1. Please submit your assignments online. Please scan and upload your solution as a
SINGLE PDF file.

2. Late submissions will NOT be marked.

3. Please write down your name, student ID, and tutorial section.
Questions:
1. Find all first and second derivatives of the following functions f (x, y, z).
(i) (x + 1)10 (y − 2)2 (z + 3)3 (ii) xyz sin(xyz)
Verify that fxy = fyx , fxz = fzx and fyz = fzy .

2. Verify that

(i) z(x, y) = arctan(y/x) satisfies the equation zxx + zyy = 0.

2
(ii) u(x, t) = e−an t sin(nx) satisfies the equation ut = auxx .

3. Find the total differential of the following functions at specific points.

(i) f (x, y) = ln(1 + x2 + y 2 ) at (2, 4).

sin x π
(ii) f (x, y) = 2 at (0, 1) and ,2 .
y 4

4. Consider the function f (x, y) = 3 xy. Show that

(i) It is continuous at (0, 0).

(ii) The partial derivatives exist at (0, 0). However, except the directions (±1, 0)
and (0, ±1), all the other directional derivatives do not exist.

5. If the function f (x, y) satisfies the following equations

∂f 1
= − sin y + and f (0, y) = 2 sin y + y 3 ,
∂x 1 − xy
find f (x, y).

6. Let u = u(x, y) be a differentiable function. Find the expression of

 2 2
2 ∂u ∂u
|∇u| = +
∂x ∂y
∂u ∂u
in terms of the polar coordinates. Namely, expressing |∇u|2 in term of r, θ, ,
∂θ ∂r
where
x(r, θ) = r cos θ, y(r, θ) = r sin θ

7. Use Taylor’s formula to find quadratic approximations to the following functions
valid in the neighbourhood of the points specified.
1+x+y
(i) , (0, 0) (ii) exy + e−xy , (0, 0).
1 + x2 + y 2

8. If w(x, y, z) = xyz + ln(xyz). Find the directional derivative D⃗u w at the point
(1, 2, 1) in the direction ⃗u = ⃗i + ⃗j. In what directions is the directional derivative
at (1, 2, 1) equal to zero?

9. Find the stationary points of the function f (x, y) = x3 − 12xy + 8y 3 and determine
their nature.

10. Consider the implicit function z = z(x, y) satisfying 2x2 +2y 2 +z 2 +8yz −z +8 = 0.
Find its extreme values.
