CONCEPT BASED -SKETCH THE GRAPH
EX7.9-2(ii),Sketch the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑥 4 − 𝑥

Given 𝑦 = 𝑥 4 − 𝑥----(1), 𝑦 2 =𝑥 2 (4 − x)----( 2)

Let us draw the graph of (2),
𝑖 𝑥 2 4 − x ≥ 0 → 𝑥 ≤4,Domain is (−∞, 4ሿ
(ii)Power of y is even, so the curve is symmetrical
about x-axis
(iii)Put y=0, 0=𝑥 2 (4 − x),we get x=o(twice) &x=4
X-intercept is(0,0) and (4,0),put x=0,we get y=o
Y-intercept(0,0),That is , the graph is passes through the origin.

Dr.K.THIRUMURUGAN,PGT,GHSS,VAZHUTHAVUR,VILLUPURAM
Sketch the graph of
𝑦 =𝑥 4−𝑥
(iv)Obviously ,the curve has
no asymptotes.
(v)The curve is concave upward
in(−∞,4)
(vi)There is no point of inflection.
If 𝑦 = 𝑥 4 − 𝑥 ) then y is positive
When x is positive and y is negative
When x is negative.
Hence the curve lies in I and III
Quadrants only.

(i)𝑥 2 − 4 ≠ 0, 𝑤𝑒 𝑔𝑒𝑡 𝑥 ≠ ±2
Domain of y=R- −2,2 ,Range(--∞,∞)
(ii)Critical number=0
(iii)The curve is Symmetrical about y axis.
(as it contain even powers of x)

𝑥 2 +1
Sketch the graph of 𝑦 =
𝑥 2 −4
−1 −1
(iv)Put x=0,y= ,y-intercept=(0, )
4 4
(v)The curve does not passes
through the origin.
(vi)Vertical asymptotes: x=-2 & x=2
Horizontal asymptotes :y=1
(v)Increasing in (-∞, −2), (−2,0)
Decreasing in (0,2),(2, ∞)
(vi)Local Maximum point, (0,-1/4)
