6) Read the passage.
The first ice cream maker was invented by Nancy Johnson. She received a patent in 1843 for her
invention, a small-scale ice cream freezer, which comprised two spatulas that fit tightly into a
long cylindrical barrel. The spatulas contained holes and were attached to a shaft that could be
rotated with a crank, while the cylinder was cooled from the outside with a salt and ice mixture.
The spatulas could be rotated in the mix and scrape ice crystals off the inner wall of the cylinder
simultaneously. This invention made ice cream making far easier than it had been, and ensured a
more uniform texture than had been possible before. It was even possible to produce two flavors
of ice cream simultaneously.
After Nancy Johnson received her patent, she did not have enough money and resources to
manufacture her machine and market it. Therefore, she sold the patent to William Young for
$200. Young, in his turn, marketed the machine as the "Johnson Patent Ice Cream Freezer." The
mechanism of Johnson's machine was used in ice cream makers around the world for many
years, and William Young made a fortune.
A)Nancy Johnson marketed her invention as the "Johnson Patent Ice Cream Freezer."
B)The new machine was the most complex machine ever made.
C)Someone else made a fortune because of Johnson's invention.

7) Read the passage.
The dodo was a bird that lived on the island of Mauritius until the seventeenth century.
Nowadays, it is extinct. It was a large, flightless bird, with a long beak and gray plumage. It had
no natural predators on the island.
When Dutch settlers came to Mauritius in the sixteenth century, they hunted numerous dodos
and ate their meat. They also introduced animals that were new to the island, including dogs,
cats, macaques, and pigs. Some of those animals escaped captivity and became feral, and they
began plundering dodo nests and eating their eggs. Since the dodo only laid one egg per season,
the number of eggs decreased quickly and the dodo population declined drastically, until the
dodo went extinct in the middle of the seventeenth century.
Which of the following sentences describes the sequence of events in the passage?
C) The dodo went extinct before the Dutch settlers came to Mauritius.
D) The dodo went extinct because of hunting and predators eating its eggs.

Antarctica, where the South Pole is located, is the coldest place in the world. The average
temperature in Antarctica is below zero. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by thick ice.
Antarctica is also the driest place on earth. In fact, it is considered a desert because it only gets
200 millimeters of rainfall (or snow) per year.
Antarctica is very big: its area is 14 million square kilometers. It is bigger than Europe, and it
is almost twice the size of Australia. However, while millions of people live in Australia, there
are no permanent human residents in Antarctica. The first people arrived at Antarctica in the 19th
century. Nowadays, 1,000 to 5,000 people spend time in Antarctica every year, living and
working at research stations.
While there are hardly any humans in Antarctica, there are various animals living there,
including several species of penguins, seals, and whales. There are also a few plants, mainly ice
algae. Studies indicate that millions of years ago, Antarctica’s climate was a lot warmer, and it
was home to large forests as well as many different land animals, such as dinosaurs.

“Honest Abe”
Abraham Lincoln is not just the face on the penny. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of
the United States and he was known as “Honest Abe." This nickname started when he was a
young boy working in a store. If he gave someone the wrong change back, then he would follow
them home and give them their left over money. “Honest Abe” is remembered as an honest boy
and a great president.
Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809 in a one-room home in Kentucky, and then later moved to
Indiana and later Illinois. He grew up very poor and after his mother passed away, his older sister
took care of him. Abraham Lincoln did not have an easy time growing up, but he was very smart.
Most of what he knew he learned on his own by reading books, he was self-taught.
Lincoln became president in 1861. Lincoln wanted to end the use of slavery in the United States,
which upset many people. Because of this, some states did not want to be apart of the United
States and tried to have their own laws and rules. A war started and lasted for 4 years. This
became known as the Civil War. After it ended, all of the states of the United States stayed
together, and President Lincoln said that all slaves needed to be set free.
Abraham Lincoln’s life was too short. He died at age 56, but he will always be remembered.

Did you know that we used to think that there were nine planets that made up the solar system? Up
until 2006, Pluto was considered to be the ninth planet and was located furthest away from the sun in
our solar system. However, since 2006 Pluto has been considered to be a “dwarf planet” because it is
too small to be considered a planet. Now that Pluto is not considered a planet, only eight planets are
left to make up our solar system. The order of the planets from the sun is as follows: Mercury,
Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Mercury is the planet closest to the sun; however, can you believe that Mercury is not the planet with
the hottest temperatures in our solar system? Well, believe it because Venus is the planet with the
highest temperatures! The only award that sets Mercury apart from any other planet in the solar
system is that it is the smallest planet.
Earth is the planet where you and I live. Earth is the only planet currently known to be the home of
living things. However, Mars does show some signs that there may be water on the planet, which is
necessary for living things to grow and live on Mars. Maybe one day we will learn that aliens really
do live on Mars!
Jupiter is the largest planet is the solar system, but it has the shortest days out of all of the planets
because it turns so quickly. A day on Earth is 24 hours long, but a day on Jupiter is less than 10 hours
long and a day on Saturn is just over 10 hours long. If we lived on Jupiter or Saturn, then we would
spend most of the day in school!
Uranus is not the furthest planet from the sun, but it is the coldest. Even though Uranus is the coldest
planet, Neptune might have the worst weather. One storm on Neptune lasted for about 5 years! Could
you imagine a storm lasting for 5 years on Earth?
One fun thing about science is that we are always learning something new because science can
change. We could learn more unknown, fun facts about the solar system in the future!
a. Saturn
b. Jupiter
c. Mars
d. Neptune
