Frequently Asked Questions

How do I contact the Home Office about my asylum

interview?

Our contact details are available in the letterhead of your invitation to

interview letter.
Our email address is: cpil‑interviewenquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk

How do I get to my interview?

If you are currently receiving asylum support, you will be given a travel
ticket to attend your interview (you may receive your travel ticket
before this letter).

If you have not received a travel ticket, you or your accommodation

provider should contact us. You should quote your Home Office and
Asylum Support reference numbers, together with details of the
interview. Our contact details can be found in the letterhead of your
invitation to interview letter.

When should I arrive for my interview?

Arrive 15 MINUTES BEFORE appointment time to avoid

any unnecessary delays.

Interview times are scheduled at various times during the day. Its
crucial to arrive promptly at the specified time mentioned in your
invitation letter to avoid any potential delays.

What will happen when I arrive for my interview?

Entry into Home Office and Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) buildings
is subject to security control, which you will have to pass through. This
is to ensure everyone’s safety and is standard procedure for all
visitors entering the building.

Will I need to show identification?

Please bring your Application Registration Card (ARC) with you. We

need to confirm your identity before the interview starts and the ARC
will help us to do this. If you do not have an ARC, please bring your
invitation to interview letter and another form of identification.

Can I bring my children to the interview with me?

We do not normally allow children into the interview as it may be

distressing for them to hear what you want to say. It can also make it
difficult for you to concentrate and say all that you want to.

Can you provide childcare?

Childcare is not currently available. We will reschedule your interview

as soon as we are able to.

Can I bring anybody else with me to the interview?

Your legal representative is welcome to attend but can only do so if

they are qualified under the terms of Part V of the Immigration and
Asylum Act 1999. If there are exceptional reasons, you may bring a
friend, companion, or supporter on condition that they are there solely
to provide emotional, medical or spiritual support. However, they
cannot take part in your interview.

If you wish to be accompanied at your interview, please email us at

least three days in advance to establish whether this will be possible.

Anyone who is attending the interview with you, including legal

representatives, will also need to show photographic identification
such as a passport, social worker identification card, biometric
residence permit or driving licence, so that we can verify their identity.
We will not delay your interview to wait for your legal representative or
other companions to arrive.

Is there anybody who cannot accompany me to my

interview?

A friend, companion or supporter cannot be permitted to attend if

they:

• are a family member

• are seeking asylum separately themselves
• have any obvious personal interest in the outcome of the claim
• have engaged in providing legal advice, and is not the nominated
legal representative

What does the interview process involve?

Your interview is important. It is your opportunity to explain your

reasons for seeking asylum. An interviewing officer will help you to
explain your claim by asking questions about it.

Who will conduct my interview?

Your interview will be conducted by an interviewer who has been

trained to provide a positive and secure environment to support you in
disclosing all of the evidence, including sensitive information, to
support your claim.

We are aware that some parts of your account may be difficult to talk
about or sensitive in nature, so you might feel more comfortable
speaking specifically to either a male or female interviewer and
interpreter.

If you have already requested a female or male interviewing officer or

interpreter, we will do our best to arrange this. If we are unable to
meet this requirement, your interview may be re‑arranged.

If you have a preference and have not already made a request, you
need to notify us as soon as possible and we will do our best to
arrange this.

How will my interview be conducted?

Asylum interviews are either conducted face‑to‑face or via

video‑conference.

If your interview is conducted face‑to‑face, you will be in the same

room as the interviewing offer and interpreter (if requested). If your
interview is conducted via video‑conference, this means that you may
not be in the same room as the interviewing officer or interpreter (if
requested) but we will make sure at the start of the interview that
everyone can hear and understand each other. If you have a reason
why your interview should not be carried out by video conference you
must let us know as soon as possible.

I have documents which support my claim. How and when
should I submit them?

You should send to us any documents or other evidence which

support your claim as soon as possible, preferably before attending
your interview. Please provide documents by email where possible
and include your name, date of birth and the reference number(s) to
asylumcentralcommunicationshub@homeoffice.gov.uk

All foreign language documents must be translated into English and

certified as authentic translations of the originals. You should show
copies of any documentation you wish to submit to your legal
representative before the interview and they will help you obtain
translations. If you are not represented or cannot provide translated
documents, you should explain why during your interview.

How long will my interview last?

The length of your interview will depend on the nature of your claim.
Some interviews can last for several hours. Setting out your claim in
writing via a witness statement can help to reduce the duration of your
interview.

You will be offered breaks during your interview but if you require a
break, please inform the interviewer.

You can bring something to eat, along with any essential medication
that you need to take. However, objects such as glass (other than
medicine) or hot drinks, which may pose a hazard to Home Office
staff and members of the public, must not be brought into the building.

Only non‑carbonated water in sealed plastic bottles can be brought

into interview rooms.

Will I get a copy of my interview record?

Your interview will be audio recorded and a written transcript will also
be made. If you have a reason why your interview should not be audio
recorded, you must tell the interviewer on the day. No video recording
of the interview will be made.

You (or your legal representative on your behalf) will be provided with
a copy of the audio recording and written transcript as soon as
possible, by post or MOVEit (an electronic system that is used to
safely transfer information to representatives who use it).

What happens if I cannot attend?

Your interview will only be rearranged if there is a good reason why

you cannot attend (for example, illness, medical appointment or
severe transport disruption).

If you are unable to attend your interview due to illness or a medical

condition, you or your legal representative must provide a letter or
certificate, or another appropriate form of evidence, for example, a fit
for work certificate. The evidence must be from a GP, consultant or
other appropriately qualified relevant healthcare professional
regulated by one of the following regulators:

• General Medical Council (GMC)

• Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC)
• Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC)

The evidence must be provided either before the interview or within 5

working days after the date of the interview to the postal or email
address provided in your invitation to interview letter. It must
specifically confirm that you were unable to attend your interview on
the relevant date and the reasons why.

If you are unable to attend for any other reason, please email us to let
us know the specific reason you are unable to attend your interview.
Interviews will not normally be rearranged for reasons such as work,
volunteering commitments, attending school/college or non‑essential
appointments.

If you do not attend the interview and do not provide a reasonable

explanation before or immediately afterwards, we may treat your
asylum claim as withdrawn.
