organized, how people interact in groups and how children learn about the world. Let’s scrutinize the cognition of
human being that involves conscious intellectual activity such as thinking, reasoning and remembering. How
human gradually constructs and use the products of his/her mind processing as results of daily experiences.

This activity the teacher motivates you to search for meaning of your existence. There are

have contributed the elements of making who you are and what you are.

Have you encountered a stranger who interacted with you as if you are
very close to each other? How did you feel? What would be your actions?

This activity aims to examine yourself by examining your knowledge about who you are
EXPLORE and what you are. According to Piaget, “the self becomes aware of itself, at least in its
action and discovers itself as a cause among other causes and as an object which is subject
to the same laws as other objects.”

This activity aims to understand how people in the surrounding affect the individual in
EXPLAIN building and developing his/her self-concept. The real and ideal self-concepts as the
results of our constant interactions with the environment and others.

 You noticed the way people think of themselves with or without biases/prejudices. The tendencies to only
focus the positive and acceptable behaviors and feelings but repress in the subconscious all those harmful or
negative energies/impulses to the mind and body.
 The transactions of the self might also be considered as an expression of true or false self. There are instances
whereby the false self-it means the fake self is put up to defend the core from these realities and prevent it from
any changes.

This activity aims to discuss the different perspectives in the explanation of the self
as a cognitive construction as well as the development of self-concept. Through this
ELABORATE
process, the self would also discover the real and ideal identity likewise, the true and
false selves.

 Self as a Cognitive Construction- focuses on the mental processes rather than the observable behavior.
This approach will assist individuals in assimilating new information to their existing knowledge and will
enable to make the appropriate modification to their existing intellectual framework to accommodate the
new information.
- Emphasizing the concept of assimilation and accommodation in constructing information
 Me-Self and I-Self, coined by William James
- I-Self= is the pure ego, the subjective self- the self that is aware of its own actions.
- Four features of I-Self:
1. A sense of being the agent or initiator of behavior- I believe my actions have an impact,
that I cause an effect in my environment.
2. A sense of being unique- this is how I am different from everything in my environment; I
perceive there is only one me.
3. A sense of continuity- I am the same person from day to day.
4. A sense of awareness about being aware- I understand what is going on in me and around
me and I know I understand it.
- Me-Self= is the self that is the object, it is the self that you can describe such as your physical
characteristics, personalities, social role or relationships, thoughts and feelings.
- It is empirical self- means based on, concerned with or verifiable by observation or experience rather
than theory or pure logic.
- Three dimensions of the Me-Self:
1. Material- physical appearance and extensions of it such as clothing, immediate family and
home.
2. Social- social skills and significant interpersonal relationships and
3. Spiritual- personality, character, defining values.

 Real and Ideal Self-concepts, coined by Carl Rogers

- Ideal Self- is the person that you would like yourself to be; it is your concept of the “best me” who
is worthy of admiration. It is a self that the individual has developed based on what you have learned
and experienced.
- Real Self- is the person you actually are. It is how you behave right at the moment of a situation. It
is who you are in reality- how you think, feel or act at present.

 True and False Selves, coined by Donald Winnicott

- True Self- has a sense of integrity, connected wholeness. It is based on a sense of being in the
experiencing body. It is based on spontaneous authentic experience. It is alive and real in one’s
mind and body, having feelings that are spontaneous and not forced.
- False Self- is used when the person has to comply with external rules, such as being polite or
following social codes. It constantly seeks to anticipate demands of others in order to maintain the
relationship.
 The self as Proactive and Agentic
- Proactive Self- is a self-regulating, self-reflective and self-organizing and has power to influence
his/her own actions to produce desired consequences. People consciously act on
their environment in a manner that permits growth toward psychological health.
- Agentic Self- is known as the executive function that allows for actions. This is how we, as
individuals, make choices and utilize our control in situations and actions. A person
might desire to eat unhealthy foods, however, it is his/her agent self that allows that
person to choose to avoid eating them and make a healthier food choice.

This activity facilitates application of learning as well as the expression of insights
