❖ Mr Gautam Gambhir appointed as Head Coach – Team India
• The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former
batter and World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of
the senior men’s team.
• Gambhir has been appointed Rahul Dravid’s successor as the India
men’s cricket team’s head coach.
• Gambhir, in his first international coaching assignment, has been
handed a long rope, having been handed charge of the team till the end
of 2027.

❖ Gagan Narang to be Indian team Chef-de Mission in Paris


Olympics
• 2012 London Olympics bronze medalist shooter Gagan Narang as the
Chef-de-Mission of the Indian team for the 2024 Paris Summer
Olympics, replacing Mary Kom.
• Ace Badminton player PV Sindhu was also appointed as the co-flag
bearer along with table tennis player Sharath Kamal.
• The 33rd Summer Olympics will be hosted by the French capital city of
Paris from 26 July to 11 August 2024.
• Paris will be hosting the Summer Olympics for the third time after 1900
and 1924.
• Four new sports have been introduced in the Paris Olympics 2024:
Breaking, Surfing, Sport Climbing, and Skateboarding.
• Athlete Purma Banerjee was the first Indian to carry the Indian flag at the
Summer Olympics at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics.

❖ Asian Squash Doubles Championship 2024


• Johor, Malaysia
• Abhay Singh and Joshna Chinappa won the mixed doubles, defeating
Hong Kong’s Tong Tsz Wing and Ming Hong Tang.
• In the men’s doubles, Singh and Velavan Senthilkumar triumphed over
Malaysia’s Ong Sai Hung and Syafiq Kamal.
• The championship featured 33 teams from seven countries and was
held from July 4-7, 2024.

❖ Lewis Hamilton Wins the British Grand Prix 2024


• He became the first F1 driver to win on any track nine times and also
extended his F1 record to 104 wins.

❖ FOUR DIFFERENT VENUES TO HOST DURAND CUP 2024


• The Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest and India’s most prestigious club-based
football tournament, is set to enter its 133rd edition in 2024.
• The 133rd Durand Cup will kick off on July 27, 2024, and conclude with
the final on August 31, 2024.
• The tournament’s finale will be held at the iconic Vivekananda Yuba
Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) in Kolkata.
• The 2024 edition will be hosted across four cities:
▪ Kolkata, West Bengal: The traditional football capital of India
• Kokrajhar, Assam: Representing the football-loving Northeast
• Jamshedpur, Jharkhand: Making its debut as a Durand Cup host
• Shillong, Meghalaya: Another Northeast football hub

• India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 second time by defeating
South Africa in the final in Barbados

• Most wickets in a T20 WC Edition:
• 17 – Arshdeep Singh (IND, 2024)
• 17 – Fazalhaq Farooqi (AFG, 2024)
• Post World Cup win, three Indian players namely, Virat Kohli, Rohit
Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja have announced their retirement from

• Kapil Dev has been unanimously elected as the President of the
Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).
• Kapil Dev, fondly known as the “Haryana Hurricane” for his exceptional
all-round cricketing skills.
❖ Smriti Mandhana becomes first Indian women’s player to score
century in consecutive ODIs
• On June 23, Smriti Mandhana set a new record for the most runs
scored by an Indian woman in a bilateral ODI series.
• Smriti Mandhana has received several accolades, including the
Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Award for the best female cricketer of the year
by the ICC in 2018 and 2022.
• She also won the BCCI award for Best Women’s International
Cricketer in June 2018, underscoring her impact and recognition in
the world of cricket.
❖ India wins 11 medals at the U-17 Asian Wrestling Championship 2024
• Indian wrestlers have ended their campaign in the Under- 17 Asian
Wrestling Championship 2024 with a total of 11 medals- four gold,
two silver, and five bronze.
• The annual Under 17 & Under 23 Asian Wrestling Championship
2024 is being held in the Jordanian capital city of Amman from 22-
30 June 2024.
❖ FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup: India to host in 2025
• The tournament will be played in December 2025.
• It will be the first time ever that a FIH Hockey Junior World Cup will
include as many as 24 teams.
• The last edition of the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup took place
in 2023 in Malaysia and was won by Germany.
❖ India joins World Boxing
• Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has agreed to join the World Boxing,
the newly-formed governing body.
• It was formed after the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
refused to recognize the International Boxing Association (IBA).
• This was announced on the sidelines of the World Olympic qualifiers
being held in Bangkok.
❖ Charles Leclerc makes history as the first home winner of Monaco
Grand Prix in 93 Years
• Charles Leclerc, the Ferrari driver, has achieved a remarkable feat by
becoming the first Monegasque driver to win the Monaco Grand Prix
since Louis Chiron in 1931, ending a drought of 92 years.

❖ Dipa Karmakar Becomes First Indian Gymnast To Win Gold In Asian


Senior Championships
• Competing in Uzbekistan’s capital, the 30-year-old Dipa achieved an
average score of 13.566 .
• North Korean gymnasts Kim Son Hyang and Jo Kyong Byol secured the
silver and bronze medals with scores of 13.466 and 12.966,
respectively.

❖ Shahid Afridi named ICC ambassador for T20 World Cup 2024
• Afridi joins India legend Yuvraj Singh, Chris Gayle and sprint sensation
Usain Bolt among the ambassadors chosen by the International
Cricket Council (ICC) for the maiden 20-team T20 World Cup.

❖ Satwik-Chirag regain World No. 1 ranking after Thailand Open triumph


• Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty regained the number one
spot in the men’s doubles world rankings following their triumph at the
Thailand Open.
• They made a spirited comeback at the Thailand Open, winning their
second title of the season with a straight game win over Chen Bo Yang
and Liu Yi of China .

• The Nandini logo, a household name in Karnataka, takes pride of place
on the leading arm of the Scotland cricket team’s jersey, with

❖ 25th May declared as World Football Day by the UN


• The resolution to mark 25th May of every year as World Football Day was
introduced by Libya’s ambassador to the United Nations Taher El-
Sonni.
• It was co-sponsored by more than 160 members of the United Nations.
• On 25 May 1924 all the regions of the world were represented in the
1924 Paris Summer Olympics football event. This year the Summer
Olympics is being held in Paris.
• Football was introduced in the Paris Summer Olympics in 1900. Intially
only men’s football team were allowed to play in the Summer
Olympics.
• Women’s football was introduced at the Atlanta Summer Olympics
in1996.

❖ Japan Wins Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Trophy


• Japanese men’s hockey team etched its name in the history books by
clinching its maiden Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy title.
• Japan emerged victorious, defeating Pakistan 4-1 in the nerve-wracking
shootout at the Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh, Malaysia, on 11 May 2024.
• India, a regular participant and five-time winner of the Sultan Azlan
Shah Trophy (1985, 1991, 1995, 2009, 2010), skipped this year’s
tournament.
• The Indian team chose to focus their preparations for the upcoming
2024 Paris Olympics, which commence on 26 July 2024.
❖ Real Madrid clinch record-extending 36th Liga title
• The Spanish football club Real Madrid has been crowned the La Liga
2023-24 season title after beating Cadiz 3-0
• The La Liga, or the Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División,
is a professional men’s club-based football championship in Spain.
• It is the highest-ranking domestic football tournament in the country. It
was started in 1929 with 10 teams.

❖ China secure Thomas Cup and Uber Cup double


• The Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 in Chengdu saw China claim both the
men’s and women’s team badminton crowns.
• In the Thomas Cup final, the host nation defeated 14-time champions
Indonesia 3-1 to secure their 11th title.
• Thomas and Uber Cup is held every two years and is organised by
the world badminton governing body, the Badminton World
Federation (BWF).

❖ India to host World Junior Badminton Championships 2025 in Guwahati


• The BWF World Junior Championships will return to India with
Guwahati being designated as the host city for the prestigious event for
the 2025 edition.
• This marks India’s second time hosting the World Juniors, following
the event in Pune back in 2008.
• India has previously hosted major badminton championships,
including the 2009 BWF World Championships in Hyderabad and the
2014 BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals in New Delhi.

• The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League has been won by Kolkata

• With his fourth Grand Prix victory of the season, Verstappen now
boasts a total of 58 career wins.

❖ Deepika Soreng Receives Asunta Lakra Award for Outstanding Hockey


Achievement
• India women’s hockey team forward Deepika Soreng expressed her
gratitude to Hockey India on April 16, 2024.
• In 2023, Deepika made her debut for the team in the Women’s Junior
Asia Cup.
• She contributed significantly to the team’s success, scoring 7 goals in 6
matches to help them clinch the gold medal, and emerged as the
team’s second-highest goalscorer.

❖ Rashmi Kumari wins national women’s carrom title for the 12th time
• Three-time World Champion Rashmi Kumari beat K Nagajothi 25-8, 14-
20, 25-20 in the women’s final of the 51st National carrom
championship organised by the Madhya Pradesh Carrom Association.

❖ Djokovic to become the oldest No. 1 in PIF ATP Rankings history


• Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, continues to break
records on the ATP Tour.
• April 9, 2024, Djokovic surpass Roger Federer’s record and become the
oldest World No. 1 in ATP Rankings history at the age of 36 years and 321
days.
• Since turning 30 in 2017, the Serbian has won an impressive 31 tour-level
titles, including 12 Grand Slams, 10 ATP Masters 1000 victories, and two
ATP Finals triumphs.

• Driver Carlos Sainz of the Ferrari team won the Australian Grand Prix
Formula One (F1) race held in Melbourne on 24 March 2024.
• His fellow Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc came second behind Carlos
Sainz.
• The 2024 Formula One championship consists of 24 Grand Prix.

❖ Ranji Trophy 2024: Mumbai win title after beating Vidarbha, end 8-year
long wait
• Mumbai beat Vidarbha by 169 runs in the Ranji Trophy final

• Mumbai also won their 42nd title in the first-class tournament
• Tanush Kotian was named the Player of the Tournament, while Musheer
Khan received the Player of the Match award for his outstanding
performance in the final.

• Services clinched their seventh Santosh Trophy title, beating Goa 0-1 in

March 2024.

• World champions Spain beat France 2-0 in Seville to win the first

❖ Asian River Rafting Champions Take On Sutlej River


• Shimla, hosted the first-ever Asian River Rafting Championships,
which will be officially launched on March 4th, 2024, by Chief
Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu
• The competition took place on the Sutlej River in Basantpur in
the Sunni area from March 4th to 9th, 2024.
• Approximately 20 national and international teams are competing,
representing Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Iran, Iraq, Tajikistan,
Kazakhstan, and Indonesia.

• The five-day long snow sports event Khelo India Winter Games 2024
came to an with a closing ceremony at Golf Course, Gulmarg.
• The 4th edition of Khelo India Winter Games saw Army crowned as
the new champions, clinching the top spot with 10 gold, 5 silver and
6 bronze medals.
• The first runner up, Karnataka, earned 9 gold and 2 silver medals,
while the second runner up, Maharashtra, had 7 gold, 8 silver and 7
bronze medals.

• Recently, Haryana emerged among the top three states in Khelo India
Youth Games (KIYG) 2024, the sixth edition of the flagship event under
the Indian government’s Khelo India initiative.
• Host state Tamil Nadu finished second with 38 gold, 21 silver and 39
bronze for their best-ever finish.

❖ Asian Games Medallist Roshibina Named Female Wushu Sanda Player

• The 23-year-old Roshibina, who won a bronze and a silver in the 2018
and 2022 Asian Games respectively, polled 93545 votes to beat
Shahrbano Mansouriyan Semiromi (88179) of Iran and Wu Xiaowei

bags bronze in Kuwait
• Yogesh claimed the individual gold medal after shooting 573, finishing
ahead of silver winner Muad Al Balushi of Oman (570) and Indonesia’s
Anang Yulianto (567).
• The other two Indian participants in the event, Pankaj Yadav (567) and
Akshay Jain (564), ended fourth and sixth respectively.

retirement from ODI cricket. This announcement came just before his final
Test match against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
• Sakshi Malik has announced her retirement due to concerns about the
Wrestling Federation of India’s leadership.
• Australian cricketer Shaun Marsh announced his retirement from
professional cricket, with the Melbourne Renegades’ fixture against Sydney
Thunder in the Big Bash League on Wednesday being his last assignment.
• Rohit Sharma created history by becoming the first male cricketer to

• India women’s team’s star opener, Shafali Verma, became the fastest

• Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist wrestler Bajrang Punia on 23 June was
suspended for anti-doping rule violation by the National Anti-Doping

• Mumbai Cricket Association president Amol Kale passed away in New York
due to a cardiac arrest while watching the India versus Pakistan match of
the 2024 T20 World Cup along with MCA secretary Ajinkya Naik and apex
council member Suraj Samat.
• Puja Tomar made history as the first Indian to win a fight in the Ultimate
Fighting Championship (UFC), defeating Brazil’s Rayanne dos Santos at
