The United Nations, a global organisation that was established in 1945, is made up of many
different organisations which work both individually and as a team to protect the rights of citizens
all over the world. Originally, the UN had 51 member states, but this number has greatly increased
throughout the years.
The UN has different roles. It supplies peacekeeping forces to ensure peaceful co-existence
between countries and offers assistance to casualties of war. It also fights disease, poverty and
hunger throughout the world. In addition, it works to protect our environment from harm and
destruction.
The UN also has many committees which are involved in such fields as economics, agriculture and
health. UNICEF, for example, is recognized all over the world as the organisation which helps
protect the rights of children. The World Health Organization (WHO) works to prevent the spread
of disease, fight epidemics and create a healthy world through education and medical care.
If you are interested in learning more about the UN, you can visit its website on the Internet. If you
are fortunate enough to visit New York City, there are daily tours of the United Nation building,
which are very informative. In addition, there are opportunities for students to study in the UN
school and to find jobs with this important organisation.

Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company, was born in Springwells Township, Wayne County,
Michigan, on July 30, 1863, to Mary (Litogot) and William Ford. He was the eldest of six children
in a family of four boys and two girls. His father was a native of County Cork, Ireland, who came
to America in 1847 and settled on a farm in Wayne County.
Young Henry Ford showed an early interest in mechanics. By the time he was 12, he was spending

constructed his first steam engine. Later, he became a machinist’s apprentice in the shops of James
F. Flower and Brothers, and in the plant of the Detroit Dry Dock Company. In 1888, he married
Clara Bryant, who had grown up on a nearby farm.
Henry Ford's journey into automobile manufacturing began in 1893 when his fascination with
internal combustion engines inspired him to build a small, one-cylinder gasoline engine. This
engine first came to life on a wooden table in the kitchen of his home at 58 Bagley Avenue in
Detroit. An improved version of this engine was used to power his first car, which was basically a
frame equipped with four bicycle wheels. It was completed in June 1896 and named Quadricycle.
On June 16, 1903, Henry and 12 others invested $28,000 and created Ford Motor Company. In
1906, he became president and controlling owner of the Ford Motor Company. In 1919, Henry,
Clara, and Edsel Ford became the sole owners of the Company. Edsel succeeded him as president
until his death in 1943, after which Henry briefly returned as president before passing the role to his
grandson, Henry Ford II, in 1945. He died two years later at his Dearborn home, at the age of 83.
