SECTION FOUR: READING

I. Read the passage and choose the correct answer (A, B, C, or D) to each of the questions that follow. (10 pts)
Have you ever thought about the names of the months? Why are “January” and “February” not called “Primo” or “Secondo”?
Is it because the original names were created in ancient times? Or is it because the originators preferred odd words?
Take February, for example. Say it aloud a few minutes and you start to wonder. Most people don’t know who developed
these names. However, a little research reveals that the names of the months came mostly from a combination of the
names of Roman gods and goddesses, important festivals, and the original numbers of the months.
Julius Caesar and Pope Gregory XIII change the calendar to make it more exact. Caesar developed a new calendar of 364
and a quarter days, the time it takes the earth to orbit the sun from one spring season to the next. The Pope’s astronomers
refined the calendar regarding leap years; they determined that there should be no leap year in years ending in 00- unless
they were divisible by 400; the years 1700, 1800, 1900 and 2100 would not be considered leap years, while the years 1600
and 2000 would be. This new Gregorian calendar was so accurate that today, scientists need only add leap seconds every
few years to the clock in order to keep the calendar matching the Earth’s cycles.

B. It was so well designed, it needs little adjusting today.
C. It copied the Roman calendar’s formula of leap years.
D. none of the answers
7. Why is Caesar important in calendar making?
A. He changed the length of the year. B. He extended summer.
C. He has a month named for him. D. He altered the number of days in the year.

house museums, but rarely in the United States is a great collection displayed in a great country house. Passing through
successive generations of a single family, Winterthur has been a private estate for more than a century. Even after the
extensive renovations made to it between 1929 and 1931, the house remained a family residence. This fact is of importance
to the atmosphere and effect of the museum. The impression of a lived-in house is apparent to the visitor: the rooms
look as if they were vacated only a short while ago whether by the original owners of the furniture or the most recent
residents of the house can be a matter of personal interpretation. Winterthur remains, then, a house in which a collection of
furniture and architectural elements has been assembled. Like an English country house, it is an organic structure; the
house, as well as the collection and manner of displaying it to the visitor, has changed over the years. The changes have
coincided with developing concepts of the American arts, increased knowledge on the part of collectors and students, and a
progression toward the achievement of a historical effect in period-room displays. The rooms at Winterthur have followed this
current, yet still retained the character of a private house.
The concept of a period room as a display technique has developed gradually over the years in an effort to present works of
art in a context that would show them to greater effect and would give them more meaning for the viewer. Comparable to the
habitat group in a natural history museum, the period room represents the decorative arts in a lively and interesting manner
and provides an opportunity to assemble objects related by style, date, or place of manufacture.

I. Read the passage and choose the correct answer (A, B, C, or D) to each of the questions that follow. (10 pts)
A pilot cannot fly by sight alone. In many conditions, such as flying at night and landing in dense fog, a pilot must use radar,
an alternative way of navigating. Since human eyes are not very good at determining speeds of approaching objects, radar
can show a pilot how fast nearby planes are moving. The basic principle of radar is exemplified by what happens when one
shouts in a cave. The echo of the sounds against the walls helps a person determine the size of the cave. With radar,
however, the waves are radio waves instead of sound waves. Radio waves travel at the speed of light, about 300,000
kilometers in one second. A radar set sends out a short burst of radio waves. Then it receives the echoes produced when the
waves bounce off objects. By determining the time it takes for the echoes to return to the radar set, a trained technician can
determine the distance between the radar set and other objects. The word “radar”, in fact, gets its name from the term “radio
detection and ranging”. “Ranging” is the term for detection of the distance between an object and the radar set. Besides
being of critical importance to pilots, radar is essential for air traffic control, tracking ships at sea, and for tracking weather
systems and storms.

SECTION FOUR: READING

I. Read the passage and choose the correct answer (A, B, C, or D) to each of the questions that follow. (10 pts)
Today’s cars are smaller, safer, cleaner, and more economical than their predecessors, but the car of the future will be far more
pollution-free than those on the road today. Several new types of automobile engines have already been developed than run on
alternative sources of power, such as electricity, compressed natural gas, methanol, steam, hydrogen, and propane. Electricity, however,
is the only zero-emission option presently available.
Although electric vehicles will not be truly practical until a powerful, compact battery or other dependable source of current is available,
transport experts foresee a new assortment of electric vehicles entering everyday life: shorter-range commuter electric cars, three-
wheeled neighborhood cars, electric delivery vans, bikes and trolleys.
As automakers work to develop practical electrical vehicles, urban planners and utility engineers are focusing on infrastructure systems
to support and make the best use of the new cars. Public charging facilities will need to be as common as today’s gas stations. Public
parking spots on the street or in commercial lots will need to be equipped with devices that allow drivers to charge their batteries while
they stop, dine, or attend a concert. To encourage the use of electric vehicles, the most convenient parking in transportation centers
might be reserved for electric cars.
Planners foresee electric shuttle buses, trains, buses and neighborhood vehicles all meeting at transit centers that would have facilities
for charging and renting. Commuters will be able to rent a variety of electric cars to suit their needs: light trucks, one-person three-
wheelers, small cars, or electric/gasoline hybrid cars for longer trips, which will no doubt take place on automated freeways capable of
handling five times the number of vehicles that can be carried by freeway today.
13. The following electrical vehicles are all mentioned in the passage EXCEPT _____.
A. vans B. trains C. planes D. trolleys
14. The author’s purpose in the passage is to _____.
A. criticize conventional vehicles B. support the invention of electric cars

A. automated freeways B. pollution restrictions in the future
C. the neighborhood of the future D. electric shuttle buses
16. The word “compact” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to _____.
A. long-range B. inexpensive C. concentrated D. squared
17. In the second paragraph, the author implies that _____.
A. a dependable source of electric energy will eventually be developed
B. everyday life will stay much the same in the future
C. a single electric vehicle will eventually replace several modes of transportation
D. electric vehicles are not practical for the future
18. According to the passage, public parking lots of the future will be _____.
A. more convenient than they are today B. equipped with charging devices
C. much larger than they are today D. as common as today’s gas stations
19. The word “charging” in paragraph 3 refers to _____.

SECTION FOUR: READING
I. Read the passage and choose the correct answer (A, B, C, or D) to each of the questions that follow. (10 pts)
Being able to land safely is a critically important skill for all flying animals. Whereas terrestrial animals face no particular
challenge when they need to stop running or crawling, flying animals move at much higher speeds, and they must be careful
about how they land. Hitting the ground, or even water, at full flight speed would be quite dangerous. Before touching down,
they must decrease their speed in order to land safely. Both bats and birds have mastered the skill of landing, but these two
types of flyers go about it quite differently.
In the past it was believed that, in terms of flying mechanics, there was little difference between bats and birds. This belief
was based only on assumption, however, because for years nobody had actually studied in graphic detail how bats move
their wings. In recent years, though, researchers have discovered a number of interesting facts about bat flight. Bats are built
differently from birds, and their wings incorporate both their front and hind limbs. This makes coordinating their limbs more
difficult for bats and, as a result, they are not very good at flying over longer distances. However, they are much better at
maneuverability: a bat can quickly change its direction of flight or completely reverse it, something a bird cannot easily do.
Another interesting characteristic of bat flight is the way in which bats land - upsidedown! Unlike birds, which touch down on
the ground or on tree branches, bats can be observed flying around and then suddenly hanging upside down from an object
overhead. How do they do it? A group of researchers recently used video cameras to film bats landing on nets suspended
from the ceiling of their laboratory and studied the recordings in slow motion. They painted spots on the bats’ wings to see in
detail what happens to the wings in flight and during touchdown. It turns out that the bats flew in a straight line up to the net
and then quickly flipped over and attached themselves to it upside down. One downside to this landing routine is that the bats
often slam into their landing spot with some force, which probably causes pain. However, not all bats hit their landing spots
with the same speed and force; these will vary depending on the area where a bat species makes its home. For example, a
cave bat, which regularly perches on a hard stone ceiling, is more careful about its landing preparation than a bat more
accustomed to landing in leafy treetops.

SECTION FOUR: READING
I. Read the passage and choose the correct answer (A, B, C, or D) to each of the questions that follow. (10 pts)
Culture is a word in common use with complex meanings, and is derived, like the term broadcasting, from the treatment and
care of the soil and of what grows on it. It is directly related to cultivation and the adjectives cultural and cultured are part of
the same verbal complex. A person of culture has identifiable attributes, among them a knowledge of and interest in the arts,
literature, and music. Yet the word culture does not refer solely to such knowledge and interest nor, indeed, to education. At
least from the 19th century onwards, under the influence of anthropologists and sociologists, the word culture has come to be
used generally both in the singular and the plural (cultures) to refer to a whole way of life of people, including their customs,
laws, conventions, and values
Distinctions have consequently been drawn between primitive and advanced culture and cultures, between elite and popular
culture, between popular and mass culture, and most recently between national and global cultures. Distinctions have been
drawn too between culture and civilization; the latter is a word derived not, like culture or agriculture, from the soil, but from
the city. The two words are sometimes treated as synonymous. Yet this is misleading. While civilization and barbarism are
pitted against each other in what seems to be a perpetual behavioural pattern, the use of the word culture has been strongly
influenced by conceptions of evolution in the 19th century and of development in the 20th century. Cultures evolve or
develop. They are not static. They have twists and turns. Styles change. So do fashions. There are cultural processes. What,
for example, the word cultured means has changed substantially since the study of classical (that is, Greek and Roman)
literature, philosophy, and history ceased in the 20th century to be central to school and university education. No single
alternative focus emerged, although with computers has come electronic culture, affecting kinds of study, and most recently
digital culture. As cultures express themselves in new forms not everything gets better or more civilized.
The multiplicity of meanings attached to the word made and will make it difficult to define. There is no single, unproblematic
definition, although many attempts have been made to establish one. The only non-problematic definitions go back to
agricultural meaning (for example, cereal culture or strawberry culture) and medical meaning (for example, bacterial culture
or penicillin culture). Since in anthropology and sociology we also acknowledge culture clashes, culture shock, and counter-
culture, the range of reference is extremely wide.

SECTION FOUR: READING

I. Read the passage and choose the correct answer (A, B, C, or D) to each of the questions that follow. (10 pts)
Two Englishes
American English is the name given to the form of the language used by the people of the United States. (Note that American English
does not include Canadian English. The two nations use very similar pronunciation, but in other respects, Canadian English is more like
British English.) British English, or Commonwealth English, is the variety used in the United Kingdom and its former colonies, including
much of Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Southeast Asia. While American and British English are
for the most part reciprocally intelligible, the differences are numerous enough to cause awkward misunderstandings and the
occasional breakdown of communication.
Some of the most obvious differences are in vocabulary. Many of these developed between the mid-19 th and the mid-20th centuries. This
was a period during which a variety of new concepts arose requiring new words. For example, a large number of words connected with
automobiles and other modern vehicles are different in the two forms of English. The British use the Celsius temperature scale whereas
Americans are more used to Fahrenheit. An American “trunk” is a British “boot.” In the U.S., they put “gas” in their cars, but in the UK,
it’s “petrol.” Americans say “subway” while the British say “underground” or “tube”.
While many of these differences are well-known in both countries, there is an inequality in the comprehensibility of American terms for
the British, compared with that of British terms for Americans. The use of many British words, such as “semi” (semi-detached house) or
“busk” (to play music in public in the hope of getting donations from passers-by) is likely to completely baffle an American. The global
popularity of American movies and television shows, on the other hand, means that few Americanisms are unknown to British English
speakers.
Less noticeable, though also numerous, are differences in grammar. The present perfect tense “I’ve gone” is more commonly heard in
British English whereas Americans use the simple past “I went.” “Did you eat yet?” is a normal question in the U.S. while “Have you
eaten yet?” is the only acceptable form for British speakers. Collective nouns, singular nouns that describe multiple people, are another
point of difference. In British English, they are used with a plural verb: “The family are worried.” Americans use them with a singular
verb: “The family is worried.”

I. Read the passage and choose the correct answer (A, B, C, or D) to each of the questions that follow. (10 pts)
THE COBRA EFFECT
The British colonized India from 1858 to 1947. That means that they ruled the country. They governed the Indian people.
They used India to make wealth for the British Empire. But they also developed India. They built canals and railroads. They
tried to make India more like the UK.
Yet India was different from the UK. It was more rustic. The ecology was different too. Some British colonists had a hard time
adapting. The snakes were particularly troubling. The capital area of Delhi was overrun with venomous cobras.
Encountering a cobra is quite frightening. It's even worse getting bitten by one. The cobras killed many colonists. Enough
died that the British government had to take action. They paid a bounty for every dead cobra.
The program was a success at first. Many people hunted and killed the cobras for the rewards. The number of cobras
dropped. The colonists felt safer. But then it became harder to catch cobras. So enterprising people started breeding them.
After all, it is easier to catch a pet cobra than a wild one.
News of this scheme got back to the British government. They learned that people were breeding cobras to earn rewards.
This is not what the British wanted to happen. They felt foolish. They scrapped the program.
Now the breeders were angry. Raising cobras can be challenging. They were doing it for the money. When the program
ended, the snakes were worthless. So the breeders released them into the wild. Now there were more wild cobras than when
the program started.
The British plan seemed like a good idea at first. In practice though, it made things much worse. This is the cobra effect. The
cobra effect is when a solution worsens a problem.
Many well-intentioned programs backfire. In 2014 the City of Chicago banned lightweight plastic bags. Single use bags are
bad for the environment. They end up in the water. They pollute the land. City officials wanted people to reuse bags. So they
put a tax on lightweight bags.
Retailers did not want to anger customers with the new tax. So they made their bags much thicker. The new bags were 150
times thicker than the old bags. The thicker bags were no longer lightweight, so they weren't taxed. But most customers did
not reuse these bags. They just threw away the really thick plastic bags.
This is another example of the cobra effect. The city intended to reduce plastic waste, yet the tax worsened it 150 fold. Our
actions do not always have the consequences that we expect.
