1. Coal India Limited (CIL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) have incorporated a joint venture company, Bharat
Coal Gasification & Chemicals Limited (BCGCL), which marks the foray of these two PSUs into coal-to-chemical business. It
is a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) in which CIL holds 51% and BHEL holds 49% equity. BCGCL has floated a tender
document for selection of LSTK-2 contractor for ‘Coal to Ammonium Nitrate’ Project at Odisha. This will be the first
commercial Coal gasification plant that showcase the indigenous coal gasification technology developed by BHEL. The
project is expected to be the first to qualify for the benefit of Rs 1350 crore under Category-1. {Read more}

2. Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL), under Ministry of Education,


has launched an “Implementation Manual of Tobacco Free Educational Institutions
(ToFEI)” in collaboration with Socio Economic and Educational Development Society
(SEEDS). The newly launched manual has been designed in line with the theme of
World No Tobacco Day 2024, “Protecting children from tobacco industry
interference”. The manual aims to assist schools in adhering to the ToFEI guidelines
issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, thereby creating a healthier,
tobacco-free environment for students. As per the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), 2019, 8.5% of students in the age
group of 13 to 15 consume tobacco. This initiative will empower all the stakeholders to adopt and enforce guidelines that
protect students from the dangers of tobacco. {Read more}

3. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) launched a new $135 million
Blue and Green Islands Integrated Programme (BGI-IP) during the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing
States (SIDS4) in St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda. This initiative aims to emphasize the crucial role of nature and expand
nature-based solutions to combat environmental degradation in three key sectors: urban development, food production,
and tourism. Targeting 15 SIDS, the program seeks to foster nature-positive changes. Managed by the UNDP and funded by
the GEF and partners, this effort represents a new wave of support for SIDS as they embark on the Decade of Action from
2024 to 2034. Selected through the “Expressions of Interest” process, the 15 SIDS, out of 39 in total, are: Belize, Cape Verde,
Comoros, Cuba, Maldives, Mauritius, Micronesia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Saint Lucia, Samoa, Seychelles, Timor Leste,

4. India received the highest foreign direct investment (FDI) from Singapore in
2023-24, according to the latest government data released by Department for
Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). FDI from Singapore has dipped
by 31.55% to $11.77 billion in 2023-24. Since 2018-19, Singapore has been the
largest source of such investments for India. FDI equity inflows in India declined
3.49% to $44.42 billion in FY 2023-24, as against $46.03 billion in FY 2022-23.
During FY24, FDI equity inflows decreased from major countries, however, investments increased from the Netherlands and
Japan. FDI from Mauritius dipped to $7.97 billion in FY24, followed by the US with $4.99 billion at the third place. It was
followed by the Netherlands ($4.93 billion), Japan ($3.17 billion), the UAE ($2.9 billion), U.K. ($1.2 billion), Cyprus ($806
million), Germany ($505 million), and Cayman Islands ($342 million). {Read more}

5. Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has set up a committee to review the ownership and economic structure of
Clearing Corporations and suggest measures to ensure that Clearing Corporations function as resilient, independent, and
neutral risk managers. The ad-hoc committee would be chaired by Usha Thorat, former Deputy Governor of the Reserve
Bank of India (RBI). The committee will examine the feasibility, and broadening the list of eligible investors, who are allowed
to take shareholding in a clearing corporation and suggest categories of investors who can acquire stakes in such
corporations. Additionally, it will examine the need to alter the caps on the shareholding of various entities in a clearing

6. Adani One, the digital platform of the Adani Group, and ICICI Bank have announced the launch of two
variants of co-branded credit cards in collaboration with card network Visa. This marks the Adani
Group’s foray into the retail financial sector. It is available in two variants - Adani One ICICI Bank
Signature Credit Card and Adani One ICICI Bank Platinum Credit Card. Cardholders can get up to 7%

7. The State Bank of India (SBI) had become the 1st Public Sector Bank and the 7th Indian company to cross the Rs 8 trillion
market capitalisation (m-cap). HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank are the only other banks with m-cap of over Rs 8 trillion. At present,
six Indian companies are valued over Rs 8 trillion. Apart from SBI, Reliance Industries, TCS, HDFC Bank, Bharti Airtel, and

the “Champions League” final at Wembley, England, to win the 2023-24 UEFA Champions

9. South Korea has officially launched its space agency, called the “KASA (Korea AeroSpace Administration)”. South Korea
plans to make a Mars landing by 2045 and spend 100 trillion won ($72.6 billion) until then on space exploration. South Korea
became the 7th country to own an indigenous space launch vehicle and satellite development technology with the launch of
‘Nuri’ rocket in May, 2023. South Korea plans at least three more space launches by 2027 and has plans to launch military

11. After a gap of 42 years, India will host the 81st “Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the
International Air Transport Association (IATA)” in 2025, the world’s most premier aviation
event. This will be the 3rd time the IATA AGM, considered one of the most significant events in
the aviation industry’s calendar, will be convened in Delhi, after 1958 and 1983. IndiGo, India’s
largest airline by market share, will be the host airline of the AGM and the World Air Transport
Summit, which will take place in Delhi between June 8 and 10, 2025. About 330 airlines,
comprising more than 80% of global air traffic, are members of IATA. The decision to host the
81st IATA AGM in India was made at the 80th IATA AGM, which was recently held in Dubai, UAE.
Currently, India ranks 5th in terms of flights handled per week, with 29,998 flights. The US tops with 1,99,469 flights, followed

12. According to the “Global Food Policy Report 2024: Food Systems
for Healthy Diets and Nutrition” released by International Food Policy
Research Institute (IFPRI), 16.6% of India’s population suffers from
malnutrition, as a result of poor diet. At least 38% of the Indian
population ate unhealthy foods, while only 28% ate all 5
recommended food groups, i.e., starchy staple food, vegetable, fruit,
pulse, nut or seed, and animal-source food. In India, the proportion of
the population suffering from malnutrition increased from 15.4% in 2011 to 16.6% by 2021. Co-authored by 41 researchers
representing IFPRI and several partner organisations, the report called for urgent and concerted efforts to transform global
food systems to ensure equitable access to sustainable, healthy diets for everyone. {Read more}

13. Netherlands has emerged as India’s 3rd largest export destination after the US and UAE during 2023-24, according to the
Commerce Ministry data. Netherlands has taken over major destinations such as the UK, Hong Kong, Bangladesh and
Germany. India’s exports to the Netherlands rose by about 3.5% to $22.36 billion in 2023-24. Overall exports reached $778.2
billion in 2023-24, as compared to $776.4 billion in 2022-23. Netherlands is among the top trading partners of India in
Europe, after Germany, Switzerland, the U.K. and Belgium. India and the Netherlands established diplomatic relations in
