Giraffe, Zebra, Elephant, Lion, Tiger

crochet pattern by Svetlana Altunina @knit.friends

2
NOTES

• Work in a continuous spiral, do not join rounds or turn your work, unless
instructed otherwise in the pattern.
• Use a stitch marker or a piece of yarn to mark the end or the beginning of
a round. Move the marker up after completing each round.
• All stitches are worked into both loops, unless instructed otherwise in the
pattern.
• Make sure to crochet tightly enough to achieve a tight gauge that will not
allow the stuffing to show through the fabric. You can use the same pattern
to make larger or smaller toys by using finer or bulkier yarn. Make sure to
pick a crochet hook at least a size smaller than suggested on the yarn label
and crochet tightly enough to achieve a tight gauge that will not allow the
stuffing to show through the fabric. You may also need to adjust the size of
the eyes.

In my pattern, I explain how to make a thread mount - this is a way of fixing
the arms and legs of a toy. However, they can spin. If you do not want to do
this, then you can simply sew arms and legs in the usual way.
Thread mount (rotating legs and arms)
1) The approximate location of the arms and legs are found with the help of
pins.
2) The most important thing that needs to be learned here is: insert and
withdraw the needle into ONE AND THE SAME hole between the sc. Always.
3) At the end we tie several strong knots, they must “drown” between the st.
Then cut the thread and thread the tails of the thread into the toy.

Methods Thread mounting from different authors may differ. I offer you my
scheme.

Thread mounting scheme.

5
Thread mount arms step by step:
Video tutorial on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WllASQwwr8&ab_channel=Knit.friends
Introduce the needle into the place of attachment of the first hand (2), output
at the place of attachment of the second hand (3).
Grab a few rounds of the second hand (4); insert the needle back into the
body, and withdraw it at the place of attachment of the first hand (5).
Grab a few rounds of the first hand (6). The thread can now be cut off, leaving
the long tail (7). Tie these tails on tight knots, adjust the tension yourself. Should
not be too weak or too tight.
6
Thread mount legs step by step:
Video tutorial on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYwAqn2iyQs&ab_channel=Knit.friends
Introduce the needle between the legs from below and output at the
attachment point of the first leg (2). Grab a few rounds of legs (3).
Introduce the needle back into the body and output at the attachment point
of the second leg (4).
Grab a few rounds of the second leg (5). Then insert the needle back into the
body, output it at the original point. There we tie a knot. The thread is cut off.

Assembly and design:

1. Sew on the muzzle on rounds 11-16, stuffing in the process of sewing.
2. Glue the eyes about on rounds 10-12, just above the muzzle, but next to
it.

3. Sew on the horns. To do this, step aside from the beginning of crocheting
the head 4 rounds, then sew on the horns on rounds 5-6. The horns are in line
with the center of the head (marked with a white line in the photo).

4. Sew on the ears. To do this, first fold the ear in half and sew the lower part.
Then sew them to the head at a distance of 1 round from the horns.
11

5. Design the eyes with a white thread, insert the needle and pull it out close
to the eyes. Then embroider the eyebrows, at a distance of 1 round from the
eye.

6. Embroider the
nostrils on the 3rd round
of the muzzle.
12
7. Sew the head to the body.

8. Sew the arms and legs to the body using a thread mounting. Place arms
on the round 19 of the body, legs - between rounds 7-8.

9. Sewing spots on the body and head.

13

10. Make a tail. To do this, we introduce a hook under the stitch on the 8th
round and grab the thread. Crochet 6 ch, then
crochet in the chains starting into the second loop
from the hook - 5 sc. Make sl st to the original point
where we introduced the hook the first time.
Fasten off and cut the thread.
Then cut 4 pieces of thread of the same length,
about 5 cm, and fasten them at the tip of the tail
like a fringe (see picture). Cut off excess length.
14

11. Tint the cheeks with oil pastels.

1. Sew the muzzle to the head in the middle
between the black stripes and on rounds 11-16,
stuffing in the process of sewing.
2. Glue the eyes on rounds 12-13, just above the
muzzle, but next to it.

3. Decorate the eyes with

black thread.
19

4. Embroider eyebrows 2 rounds above the eyes.

5. Sew on the ears. To do this, first fold the ear in

half and sew the lower part. Then sew them to the
head on round 8 (above the black stripes).

Rnd 7: 3 sc, 1 inc, (5 sc, inc) * 5, 2 sc (42)

Fasten off the thread and leave a long tail for sewing.

Assembly and design:

1. Sew on the trunk on the round 13.

2. Make eye pits. Look at the photos, they will help you
understand this process.
Insert the needle at the bottom of the head (center),
while leaving the tail of the thread outside. Pull the
26
needle out to the 12th round at a distance of 1 sc from the trunk. Retreat 1 sc
in the direction of the trunk and insert the needle. Pull out the needle at the
original point. Tie two tails of thread, while adjusting the depth of the eye hole

3. Glue the eyes into these holes. Let the glue dry
for 10-15 minutes, then proceed with the design of the
eyes.

4. Embroider the white of the eye. Insert and pull

the needle close to the eye.
27
5. Embroider the eyebrows 1 round above the eyes.

6. You can embroider a smile (it is not in the final version, but with it the
elephant looks kind-hearted, so I will tell you how to do it). The smile is located
a little under the trunk (the trunk covers it from above).
Pull the needle out at the bottom of the mouth and insert it into the top
point, while pulling it out in the place where the mouth will bend. Pay attention
- the thread is under the needle. Now we tighten the thread, but not too much
- we form the mouth. Then we insert the needle into the same point from where
it was just taken out. We do not tighten too much, otherwise there will be a
"failure" in this place. Sew a stitch in any inconspicuous place, make a knot
and cut the thread.

7. Embroider the stripes on the trunk. I have three

stripes, the distance between them 2 rounds.

8. Sew on the ears. Be

sure to pin them down
first! So, sew the ears on
rounds 7-13. Pay
attention to how the ears
are located.
28

9. Sew the head to the body.

10. Sew on arms and legs using a thread

fastening. Sew arms on rounds 17-18. Sew on the
legs on rounds 7-8.

11. Make a tail. To do this, we introduce a hook under the stitch on the round
9 and grab the thread. Crochet 6 ch, then crochet in the chains starting into
the second loop from the hook - 5 sc. Make sl st to the original point where we
introduced the hook the first time. Fasten and cut the thread.
Then cut 4 pieces of thread of the same length, about 5 cm, and fasten them
at the tip of the tail like a fringe (see picture). Cut off excess length.

Ears.

Direction: work in turn rows - when we crocheted one row, we turn the part
and then crochet in the opposite direction. In this case, at the beginning of
each row you must do 1-2 ch.
33
Explanation: why 1-2 ch? It depends on your habit. Someone does only 1 ch,
but I do 2 - it's more convenient for me.

Start crocheting with milk color yarn.

Row 1: 6 sc in a magic ring, don’t connect the row -
you get a semicircular shape. 2 ch, turn.

Row 2: (1 sc, inc) * 3 (9).

Change thread to orange
color, then do 2 ch, turn.

Row 3: (inc hdc, 2 hdc) * 3

(12).
Fasten off the thread and
leave a long tail for sewing.

Muzzle.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: inc * 6 (12)
Rnd 3: 2 sc, 2 inc, 4 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc (16)
Rnd 4: 16 sc (16)
Fasten off the thread and leave a long tail for
sewing.

Tail.
Start crocheting with brown color yarn.
Rnd 1: 7 sc in a magic ring (7)
Rnd 2: 7 sc (7)
34
Change to the orange color yarn.
Rnd 3-4: 7 sc (7)
Change to the brown color yarn.
Rnd 5: 7 sc (7)
Then crochet a combination of 3-5 rounds (that is, 2 rounds - orange, 1 round
- brown) 4 times.
Thus, we have already crocheted 17 rounds.
Change to the orange color yarn.
Rnd 18-19: 7 sc (7).
Fasten off the thread and leave a long tail for sewing.

Assembly and design.

1. Sew the head to the body, first fixing it in the
desired position with pins.
2. Sew the muzzle and ears to the head.
The muzzle is located on rounds 13-17 (fill in the
process of sewing).
The ears are located on rounds 7-11, and the
distance from the center of the head to the edge of
the ear is 6 rows. Pay attention to how the ears are
sewn. They should be slightly concave inward at the
center of the ear (sewn in an arc, not a straight line)

Shape the ears with

your fingers ↓
35
3. Embroider 3 stripes on the head.
One strip consists of three stitches that are connected at one point (from the
forehead). The length of the strip is approximately 7 rows.
We start to embroider from the center strip.
Pay attention to the location of the first stitch - if you mentally extend it, then it
will divide the head and muzzle in half (that is, it is located in the center of the
head; in other words, it goes through the start of crocheting the head).
Sew the first stitch in the center of the head as described above. Then make
another stitch on each side, which will converge at one point on the forehead.
Thus, one strip has the shape of a triangle. Do not cut the thread and pull the
needle out on the forehead, but already at the point where there will be a
new strip.

Second strip: sew the main (center) stitch again, and then another stitch on
each side.
In a similar way, make another (third) strip.
36
4. Glue the eyes near the muzzle.
Then you can sew arms (as I did) or continue the
design of the face. Instructions for sewing arms on a
thread mount are at the beginning of this crochet
pattern.

5. Sew around the eyes with white thread -

make a stitch around the half of the eye.
How to do it ↓

6. Embroider the nose. For this, I advise you to take a very thin and sharp
needle. First, make the outline of the nose with two stitches. Then "fill" the inner
part of the outline with vertical stitches that connect to one point. From the
bottom of the nose, make one small vertical stitch.

7. Embroider eyebrows.
37

8. Now you can sew on the legs and arms (if you haven't already) using the
thread mount. Or just sew on.

9. Sew on the tail about the 9th round of the body.

10. Make 2 pom-poms (I did it with a fork - the video can be found on YouTube,
an example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyldc1DRaG0 link is active - click on it).
At the moment when you are about to tie the pompom through the middle,
take a longer thread so that you can fold it in half (so that it becomes stronger
38
and does not break from strong tension). When the pompom is tied, the thread
is not cut off. For these two tails we tie the pompom to the ribbon - we tie it
into several knots.
How it looks:

Once the pom-pom is tied to the ribbon, the ends of

the string can be cut to fit the width of the pom-pom.

Make another pompom

and tie it to the ribbon.

Dress up your little

tiger! ♥

I hope your tiger is

the cutest.

Mane (please note: you may need a different number of ch. Apply this to
your lion's head and pick up the right number. Then, follow my instructions)
Crochet 57 ch. Crochet in the chains starting into the third loop from the hook:
Row 1: 1 hdc in each stitch to the end of the row, turn the part and then
crochet in the opposite direction

Row 2: 3 ch, 2 dc in the same st, then continue crocheting FLO 3 dc in each
stitch to the end of the row. In the picture, I have marked the front loops with
a tick - this is very important. On the reverse side, the first row of the mane will
begin to curl.

Front side ↓ Wrong side↓

43

Fasten off the

thread and leave a
long tail for sewing.

Assembly and design.

1. Sew the muzzle to the head on rounds 11-16 and glue the eyes.

2. Decorate the eyes with white thread. Insert the needle and take it out
close to the eye.

3. Embroider the nose. I do this with a Jeans thread, which was used to
crochet a mane, but I separated it into 2 parts (I took two threads out of four).
First, embroider the main contour - a triangle, then fill the inner part of the
contour with vertical stitches. Then sew one stitch down from the bottom of
the nose.
44

4. Embroider eyebrows with ½ thread Jeans.

5. Sew on the mane. It is located on the head as

follows: 6 sc to the side from the outer edge of the
eye, 4 rounds below the muzzle, at the top - passes
through the beginning of crocheting (start). Notice
where the front of the mane was (see the
description above in the photos), then pin and sew
with small, neat stitches.
45

What does it look like from behind:

6. Sew on the ears

on rounds 6-8 of the
head close to the
mane.

7. Before sewing the arms and legs to the body,

embroider the stripes on them. To do this, divide
the Jeans thread into 4 parts and take only one
thread. We embroider stripes on the front of the
foot (see photo).
For arms - stripes are located on rounds 3-5th at a
distance of 3 sc between them.
For legs - stripes are located on rounds 4-7th at a
distance of 5 sc between them.
46
8. Sew the head to the body.

9. Sew on the arms and legs using a thread mount.

The arm attachment point will be approximately between the 5th and 6th
rows, counting from the head. The attachment point of the legs is
approximately between rounds 6 and 7 of the body from the beginning of
crocheting the body.
47

10. Tinted cheeks with oil pastels.

Congratulations! Your Lory the lion is ready!
