Tutorial 2

1. An object is launched at an angle of 45o with an initial kinetic energy E. When the
object reaches the maximum height, it explodes into two fragments. The explosion
provides an additional mechanical energy of E. After explosion, one fragment with
mass m1 travels straight downwards with a velocity v1. However, the other fragment
with mass m2 continues its projectile motion with a velocity v2. Assume, all the
motions are in x-y plane.
E(2m2 − m1 )
(a) Show that, v1 =
m1 (m1 + m2 )
(b) Show that, the x and y components of the velocity v2 can be expressed as,
1
v2 x = E(m1 + m2 )
m2
1 m1E(2m2 − m1 )
v2 y =
m2 m1 + m2
(c) Find the horizontal distance (along x-direction) that the m2 travels from the initial
launch position, if m1=2kg, m2=3kg, E=100J and acceleration due to gravity, g=
10m/s2.

2. An object is rotating in a circular path with uniform angular velocity, w.

(a) Write the position vector of the object in polar coordinates.
(b) Show that, the acceleration is always towards the center of the circular orbit.

3. The coordinate of a moving particle in three dimensions at any time, t can be

expressed as x=rcost, y=rsint and z= t. What is the shape of the trajectory ?

4. What is the angular momentum of the moon in its circular orbit about the earth? (Find
out the required constants from the any standard source)

5. What is the orbital angular momentum of an electron orbiting around a proton? The
circular orbital radius is 0.5 angstrom.

6. An aeroplane is flying at a height 10000 m from the surface of the Earth.

(a)What is the speed of the aeroplane towards west on the equator, so that the
passengers inside see the Sun at a fixed point.
(b) What is that speed at latitude of 60o.
7. Prove the following:
(a) the change in kinetic energy (T) for an object with constant mass (m) can be
dT !" "
expressed as, = F •v
dt
(b) If the mass varies with time, the above equation is expressed as follows:
d(mT ) !" !"
= F•p
dt
where, the symbols carry usual meaning.
!" "
8. A particle is subjected to a radial force: F = f ( r )êr .
!" !" " • "•
Show that, F × L = −mf (r)[−r r +r r ] .

9. Prove that, Newton’s 3rd law shows conservation of linear momentum.

10. Two pipes of diameter d and weight W1 are kept in a box of width 3d in such a way
that, their centers are separated by a distance 2d. Now, a third pipe with diameter 2d
and weight W2 is kept over the other two pipes. Show that, the force on each vertical
W
walls of the box is F = 2 .

11. A pendulum consists of a wooden mass of 1 Kg suspended by a string. A bullet of

mass 10 g hit on the wooden mass at rest at a velocity 500 m/s and emerges out of it at
a velocity 100 m/s. Through what vertical height does the pendulum rise? (Solve the
problem based on momentum conservation and energy conservation. Do the answers
differ? Which one is correct? why?)

12. One solid cylinder and another thin-walled hollow cylinder of same mass m (= 1Kg)
initially at rest are rolling down an incline. The height of the incline was h (=1 m).
The radius of the cylinders was R (= 20 cm). Find the translational velocity of the
cylinders after rolling down the incline. Which cylinder has the greatest translational
velocity? why?

13. Two masses m (=11 Kg) and M (=44 Kg) are suspended at the ends of a massless
rope through a pulley. The pulley of radius R can be treated as a uniform solid
cylindrical disc. The downward acceleration of the mass M is exactly one-half of the
acceleration due to gravity. Find the mass of the pulley.

M
14. A coin is placed on a rotating circular table, at a distance r from its center. Consider µs
as the coefficient of static friction. What is the maximum frequency of the rotation for
which the coin will not slip ?

15. A disc of mass M and radius R is rolling down an inclined plane of angle θ. Determine
the frictional force acting on the disc while it is rolling down the incline. What will
be the nature of the motion of the disc in the absence of friction ?

16. A block with weight W1 = 100N is hanged vertically from a massless string which
rounds a frictionless and massless pulley to attach to a second block with weight W2,
kept in an inclined plane with angle of inclination, q = 30o., as shown in the figure.
(a) If the inclined plane is frictionless, what will be the value of W2 to maintain
equilibrium ?
(b) If the inclined plane has a coefficient of static friction µs = 0.4, what is the range
of the values of W2 to maintain the equilibrium ?
