MDC-2000 Series Introduction

Introduction

The main features of KODEN color LCD marine radar MDC-2000 series are as follows.
 The high performance radar equipped with 10.4 inch color TFT LCD display can be used for
professional use.
 Since, in the true trail function, moving targets such as other ships are displayed with tail and
stationary targets such as land are displayed with fix, the moving targets and fixed targets can be
easily distinguished. (Requires heading and speed signal input.)
 Two screen images with different ranges can be displayed. If you set both short range and long
range, you can navigate the ship properly and grasp at the situation.
 The automatic tracking aid (ATA) function is provided. The maximum 50 targets can be tracked.
The current movement of other ships can be shown with a vector and numeral value. It helps your
safety navigation. (ATA board: Option, requires heading and speed signal input.)
 By connecting the AIS receiver, the collected information such as name, heading and speed of a
ship can be displayed. (AIS interface: Option, requires heading and position signal input.)
 With the adoption of a specific filter (AR coat), an image can be seen more clearly against direct
sunlight.
 The RGB output for an external monitor is provided as standard equipment. The use of an
external monitor enables you to observe easily the radar screen at a location away from a main
unit. (External monitor: Owner supplied)
 A video from a CCD camera can be displayed. Observation of the engine room by CCD camera
helps your ship navigate safely. (CCD camera: Owner supplied)
 Easy operation with dedicated control knobs for GAIN and STC.
 Water protection, IPX5 of the display enables the use of the bridge.

 At the time of flush-mounting installation, you can easily fix and remove from front side of the
display.

2 Power supply circuit

Power supply circuit outputs 5V, 12V, -12V, 24V and 250V of the inner powers from the ship’s main
supply, ranging from 10.8 to 31.2 VDC. 5V, 12V and -12V are supplied to the logic circuit and 12V, 24V
and 250V are supplied to the Antenna-Scanner unit.12 V and 250 V which are supplied to the
Antenna-Scanner unit are equipped with the ON/OFF feature by the instruction from the logic circuit.

3 Logic circuit
The Radar signal which was input to the logic circuit is converted into seven kinds of digital signal
according to the strength of the signal after processing the signal. Seven digital signals have each own
color and displayed in 10.4 inch color LCD by the LCD controller.

4 Panel circuit
The panel circuit is composed of 12 key switches and 2 volumes with switch. It controls ON/OFF of the
power, the keys and GAIN & STC volumes by the logic circuit. The illumination of the panel is made
and adjusted by 18 LED.

5 LCD I/F

The LCD I/F is interconnecting PCB between LCD unit and logic PCB.

1 Transmitter - receiver / Scanner controller Circuit
The Transmitter Circuit consists of a modulator and a pulse transformer. The modulator and the pulse
transformer generates a high voltage pulse to drive the magnetron.
The Receiver consists of a band pass filter, an amplifier and a video detector. The band pass filter
controls the receiver bandwidth. The amplifier amplifies an intermediate frequency (60MHz) raised from
the front-end-module. The video detector detects an envelope of the amplified signal.
The Scanner controller circuit consists of a logic control circuit and a stepping motor control circuit.
2 Magnetron
The magnetron oscillates at 9410 MHz (± 30 MHz) and peak power is approximately 4 kW, 6 kW,

12kW.

3 Front-end-module (MIC)
The front-end-module converts signals received by the antenna into the intermediate frequency.
4 Limiter diode
The limiter diode protects the front-end-module from damage by excess high power signals.
5 Motor
The motor of RB715A is a pulse stepping type. The motor of RB716A, RB717A and RB718A is a DC
motor.
6 Circulator
The circulator divides a transmitting signal and a receiving signal.
7 Antenna
The antenna is a slot array type. The antenna transmits a microwave and receives echoes from targets.

3.1 Maintenance and Cleaning

To operate the radar equipment in a good condition for a long period of time, perform the inspection and
cleaning periodically.

3.1.1 Monthly Inspection

Caution: Before starting the inspection, ensure

ensureto turn off the power of the radar equipment.

Do not turn on the power of the radar during

inspection.

(1) To protect the LCD and enhance the visibility, the acrylic filter is installed on the surface. If the
acrylic filter is dirty, an image cannot be clearly seen. If dirty, dip a soft cloth into a neutral detergent,
wring it lightly and wipe the filter surface lightly with the cloth. Do not use a dry cloth. If done so, due
to static electricity, the acrylic filter will attract dust.

Thinner Caution Never use a thinner solvent. The filter surface will be
chemically decomposed, resulting in the loss of the
solvent transparency.

(2) Check that the radiation surface of the antenna is not dirtied by soot. Dip a soft cloth into water or
soap water, wring lightly and wipe the antenna with the cloth. Check for damage and paint sticking.

Note: Before performing the maintenance and inspection of the antenna, thread a string
through the hole of radome (upper) as illustrated below and hang it up.
