1. INTRODUCTION
This specification covers building and equipment noise requirements for FARASAKOU Storage Terminal
Development Plan, located in Bandar ASSALUYEH, Iran.

2. SCOPE
Scope of this specification is to define maximum permissible and/or recommended noise limits in work area
(outdoors and indoors) to be achieved by means of either inherent design of materials and/or equipment, noise
attenuation measures or personal protective equipment (ear protectors).

3. CODES AND STANDARDS

Noise requirements for indoors and outdoors area shall be in accordance with the following codes and
standards:

IPS Iranian Petroleum Standards

IPS-G-SF-900 General Standard for Noise Control and Vibration (Edition 2015)

4. INDOOR NOISE
This section presents the requirement for the recommended maximum noise level inside certain buildings of
the terminal. It covers the following buildings:
- Main office
- Control building
- Substation
- Fire Station
Noise levels in buildings should be managed via acoustic windows (UPVC, double glass) and doors, and
inherently low-noise transfer materials of construction.

4.1. Maximum Recommended Noise Levels Inside Buildings

Work Area Classification should be as defined by table 4.1.1.

Table 4.1.1
Area Class Description dB(A)
a - Workshops for light maintenance 75
- Workshop offices
b - Control rooms, not continuously manned 60
- Computer rooms
- Control rooms, continuously manned
c - Open plan offices 55
- Social rooms, changing rooms, wash places and toilets
d - Offices, meeting rooms 45
e - Executive Offices, large conference rooms 35

4.2. Noise and Vibrations Generated by HVAC Equipment

Noise from HVAC equipment transmitted through ducts should not result in sound pressure levels inside
the room higher than the maximum recommended noise level in that room.
Noise caused by HVAC installations should be reduced by applying one or more of the following
measures:
- Air duct silencers
- Sound proofing of air ducts
- Isolation of rotating / vibrating equipment from piping, ducting and structures by means of flexible

5. EQUIPMENT NOISE
This section presents the requirements for the maximum noise emission for the terminal to guarantee
personnel hearing conservation. It covers the following equipment and packages:
- Pumps
- Compressors (inside N2 package)
- Electrical motors
- Control valves
- Safety / relief valves
“Work Area” is any position not less than 1m from equipment surfaces which is accessible to personnel, or
any position where an operator’s ear may be exposed to noise in the normal course of duty or emergency
conditions. It includes any platform, walkway or ladder.

5.1. General Specification

The maximum value for the equipment noise limit in the work area shall be 85 dB(A); all tolerances

included, for all equipment rotating or not, electrical motors, control valves, etc.

5.2. Absolute Limit

The absolute limit of 115 dB(A) for work area shall not be exceeded for emergency conditions, such as
safety / relief valves.

5.3. Restricted area

Restricted areas are those work areas in the plant where it is not reasonably practicable to reduce the
noise level below the work area limit. The absolute limit of 115 dB(A) remains valid in such areas. If it
is unavoidable that the work area limit will be exceeded around particular equipment, action shall be
taken to limit the area involved as far as possible. Exposure durations to sound pressure levels above
85 dB(A) shall not exceed durations specified in Table 5.3.1 (applicable sections of Table 3 of
IPS-G-SF-900).
Table 5.3.1
Duration Per Day Sound Level
(Hours) (dB(A))
8 85
4 88
2 91
1 94

5.4. Maximum Sound Pressure Levels for Specific Equipment

Valves for Control

For each control valve and its associated pipe work, the requirements of clause 5.3 shall apply. Control
valve noise shall be determined for three operating conditions (minimum, normal and maximum). Noise
limits shall not be exceeded for any of the three conditions.
Safety / Relief and Emergency Valves
The noise from safety/relief valves and Emergency Isolation/Shutdown Valves (and their piping) which
blow under emergency conditions only, shall not exceed the absolute limit (clause 5.2) in any work
area. Vendor of these valves shall be responsible for noise calculation.
Piping
Noise emitting from piping shall be subject to the same restrictions as general specification
(clause 5.3). Such noise usually has its origin in equipment such as a valve. The noise shall be
controlled by selecting low noise equipment (by design) or, when this is not reasonably practicable, by
incorporating in-line silencers or acoustic insulation.
Vents
Vents intended for emergency use only shall be subject to the same requirements as safety / relief
valves.
