Learning Episode 9: Preparing for Teaching and Learning

Activity 9.1 Demonstrating an understanding of Research-Based Knowledge Principles of
Teaching and Learning
Resource Teacher: Teacher’s Signature: School: A.C Ruiz Elementary School
Grade/year Level: 4 Subject Area: General Date: November 15, 2021
OBSERVE
Observe a class with the use of the principles of learning given in Revisit the Learning Essentials. I
will identify evidence of applications/violations of the principles of learning. I can cite more than one
evidence per principle of learning.
Principles of Learning What did the Resource Teaching do to apply the
principle of learning
1. Effective learning begins with the setting of The teacher uses projector to show her planned
clear and high expectations of learning learning outcomes for the topics.
outcomes.
2. Learning is an active process. Students were encouraged to participate fully in
class discussions and educational learning
activities by the teacher.
3. Learning is the discovery of personal meaning The teacher gives learners the opportunity to
and relevance of ideas. think about and express their thoughts on the
topic, as well as discuss it in front of the class.
4. Learning is a cooperative and a collaborative The teacher assigns students to interpret the
process. Learning is enhanced in an poetry by producing, brainstorming ideas with
atmosphere of cooperation and collaboration. their peer groups, and debriefing their final
thoughts in a group work exercise. The learners
are eager to ask questions, communicate with
one another, share ideas, discuss, and
collaborate in order to comprehend the
readings.

ANALYZE
1. What principles of learning were most applied? Least applied?
Most applied
 The learning principle that is mostly applied is the “learning is cooperative and collaborative
process”, because the resource teacher always grouped the class for the students to feel free
in sharing their ideas. They will be exchanging thoughts and they will now come up with an
answer in presenting their output.
Least applied
 The learning principle that is least applied is the “learning is the finding of personal meaning
and relevance of concepts” because the teacher spent most of the time in explaining and
sharing his/her ideas on the subject.

2. Give instances where this/these principle/s could have been applied?

 In class, the teacher did the majority of the work. This is in sharp contrast to a teacher who
mostly assists students in their learning while the students are the ones who contribute ideas
to a given topic.
REFLECT
From among the principles of learning, which one do you think is the most important?
 I think the most important among the principles of learning is learning is an active process
because this principle must be actively interested, engage in higher-order cognitive task such
as analysis, synthesis, and assessment. Active learning practiced are advised in this context
for instructional activities that include students doing things and thinking about what they are
doing.
Activity 9.2 Identifying Learning Outcomes that are aligned with Learning Competencies
Resource Teacher: Teacher’s Signature: School: A.C Ruiz Elementary School
Grade/year Level: 4 Subject Area: General Date: November 15, 2021
OBSERVE
Observe a class, this time focusing on how the learning outcomes were stated. Determine if the
learning outcome/s was/were achieved or not. Give evidence.
1. Write the Learning outcomes stated in the lesson.
Learning outcomes (SMART Objectives?) Achieved
Yes No Yes No
1. Paints a landscape using shapes and colors. / /
2. Sketches and paints a mural using shapes and colors / /
appropriate to the way of life of the cultural community.
3. Realize the choice of colors use gives the mood or feeling. / /
4. Analyzing pictures. / /
5. Make a paragraph from the picture presented. / /

2. Cite pieces of evidences that these learning outcomes were achieved.

1. Picture of students painting a landscape.
2. The paragraph presented by the students.
3. The learner’s output.

ANALYZE
1. Do SMART objectives make the lesson more focused?
- Yes, since it is not just attainable but also achievable for the learners. And it is also relevant
to our daily life.

REFLECT
Reflect on the Lessons learned in determining SMART learning outcomes.
- In determining SMART learning outcomes, it should deal and touch our life and achievable
and very timely. Nothing would make sense if you are just teaching without evaluating your
work.
Activity 9.3 Distinguishing Between Inductive and Deductive Methods of Teaching
Resource Teacher: Teacher’s Signature: School: A.C Ruiz Elementary School
Grade/year Level: 4 Subject Area: General Date: November 15, 2021
OBSERVE
Teacher-Centered Student-Centered
Did teacher lecture all the time? Were students involved in the teaching-learning
- No. process? How? Or were they mere passive
recipients of instruction?
- The learners are very active in
participating and they are involved in
all activities.
Was the emphasis on the mastery of the lesson Was the emphasis on the student’s application
or on the test? Prove. of the lesson in real life?
- On the lesson, it is because the - A questioned was raised by the
teacher elaborated what must the teacher and ask them to relate in a
students know through an activity. realistic situation.
Was class atmosphere competitive? Why? Was class atmosphere collaborative? Why?
- Yes, because they are actively - Yes, they work in the group and active
participating. in teams.
Did teacher focus on one discipline/subject? Did teacher connect lesson to other
- No, the teacher integrated another disciplines/subjects?
subject. - Yes.
Was teaching-learning practice shows that teaching approach was:
a. Constructivist-connected to past experiences of the learners; learners constructed new
lesson meanings
- Learners were relate a scene on their activity to real life situation.
b. Inquiry-based
- The learners, I believed, are inquisitive enough.
c. Developmentally appropriate- learning activities fit the developmental stage of children
- The activities set by the teacher reflects on the development stage of children.
d. Reflective
- The learners, as I’ve said, learn to relate real life situation.
e. Inclusive-no learner was excluded; teacher taught everybody
- The teacher gives an individual work and checks them one-by-one.
f. Collaborative-students work together
- The learners brainstorm to collate ideas.
g. Integrative- lesson was multi-disciplinary- e.g. in science, math concepts were taught
- The learners try to integrate their lesson/topic into other area of specialization.

ANALYZE
1. What are possible consequences of teaching purely subject matter for mastery and for the
test?
- Some students may find it interesting especially to those who are topping the class, but for
some learners may find it boring especially to slow learners. Low achievers, I believed,
loves a twist in order for them to understand the lesson.
2. If you were to reteach the classes you observed, would you be teacher-centered or student-
centered? Why?
- Teaching nowadays must not be boring to students. Else, they will not listen, worse, they
will sleep and show that you are not worth in teaching them. If I were to reteach the class, I
will be student-centered to engage them and enhance their learnings and to develop their
critical thinking.
REFLECT
Reflect on Principles of teaching worth applying
- For me, if I am going to teach, I make sure that the classroom setting creates a beautiful
ambiance. Why? It is because this is where they can get their attention. The learners may
be able to give their full concentration and attention to teacher. Also, it is giving an activity, I
will make sure to give them positive reward/feedback.
