Essay 2 Prompt
For your second essay assignment in our course, you will analyze one of the themes in Lucy
Knisley’s An Age of License. Write an essay of 800 words or more (about 2.5-3 pages)
exploring one of the following questions:
 What is the “age of license”? How does Knisley explore this concept in her graphic travel
log?
 In what ways does Knisley explore the ideas of the unknown and uncertainty that she
suggests is part of being a young adult?
 How does Knisley make connections between freedom and travel? What experiences and
privileges do travel allow Knisley to explore?
Your essay must include short quotes (and include in-text citations) from Knisley’s An Age of
License. You should also summarize and describe images from the text that support your claims.

Reminders about Essay Writing

To get you started, here are a few things to remember about essay writing. Essays typically have
a main idea (thesis statement) that is the central focus of the written piece. The author usually
makes a claim about the central idea or argument. An author supports their claim(s) with
evidence to demonstrate or support their claim(s). In an analytical essay, such as the one you are
writing, use summary, paraphrasing, or quotes from assigned readings to support your claim(s).
See handouts on Blackboard for further guidance.

Brainstorming Questions
1. What are some of the anxieties Knisley expresses in An Age of License about life, love
and her career?
2. Why is youth a time for exploration and more forgiving for making mistakes?
3. In what ways is travel an expression of freedom?
4. As a reader, what is your takeaway from Knisley’s travel log? What broader ideas or
themes can her work be connected to?

Essay Guidelines

1. MLA Format: Include the follow fundamentals of MLA format in your essay:
Jones 2

a. Provide your heading at the top left corner of the first page. Your heading should
include your name, course information, assignment identification (i.e. Essay 1), and
the date.
b. The title of your essay should be in the center of the page after the heading. DO NOT
underline the title. The title of your essay should not be “Essay 2,” be creative!
c. Your essay should be doubled spaced with 1-inch margins.
d. Use size 12 Times New Roman font.
e. Page numbers should appear in the top right corner.
f. Include in-text citations for sources summarized, paraphrased, or quoted.
g. If you choose to cite any work or author other than ones assigned for class, you will
need to include a works cited list at the end of your essay.
2. Your Work, Your Voice: Remember that the expectation is that the work you submit is
your own ideas and voice. Whenever we incorporate the ideas of others we need to give
them credit for their contribution (this is called attribution) by citing the source in our
essay. Each student is expected to complete assignments without substantive assistance
from others, including automated tools (AI tools such as ChatGPT, iA Writer,
MidJourney, DALL-E, etc).
3. Submitting your Essay: Your essay must be submitted to Blackboard by 11:59pm on
11/4/24. Use the following instructions to upload your paper:
1. Under My Courses click on our course.
2. On the left-hand Panel (in grey) click “Course Content,” followed by the “Essay
Assignments and Submissions” folder.
3. Find and then click on the assignment (in this case “Essay 2”) and under
