Analysis of Community Needs and Problems using SWOT

is a process that helps identify and evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats
related to addressing the specific needs and challenges within a community. This method provides a
structured way to assess both internal and external factors that can influence how effectively a
community can address its problems or improve its situation.

When applying SWOT to analyze community needs and problems, you would focus on these four
aspects:

1. Strengths

- These are the existing resources, assets, and positive aspects within the community that can be
leveraged to solve its problems or fulfill its needs.

- Examples:

- Strong community engagement and volunteerism.

- Established local leadership or community organizations (e.g., nonprofits, schools, religious

institutions).

- Access to specific skills or expertise within the community.

- Existing infrastructure or social programs that can be utilized or expanded.

2. Weaknesses

- These are the challenges or limitations that hinder the community's ability to address its needs or
solve its problems.

- Examples:

- Lack of funding or resources for essential services.

- Limited access to education or healthcare.

- Social divisions or lack of cooperation among different groups within the community.

- Inadequate infrastructure (e.g., transportation, technology, housing).

3. Opportunities

- These are the external factors or trends that could potentially benefit the community and help
address its needs.

- Examples:

- Availability of government grants or funding programs aimed at improving community welfare.

- Increased awareness or advocacy around certain issues (e.g., mental health, homelessness).

- Opportunities for public-private partnerships or collaboration with NGOs.

- New technologies or innovative solutions that could be introduced to the community (e.g.,
telemedicine, renewable energy).

4. Threats

- These are the external challenges or risks that could negatively impact the community’s ability to
address its problems or meet its needs.

Examples :

- Economic downturn or job losses affecting local residents.

- Political instability or changing government policies.

- Natural disasters or environmental issues (e.g., floods, droughts).

- Societal trends such as rising inequality or increasing crime rates.
