Subject: Suzuki Multi-function Gauge Updates
Table of Contents
The SMG4 started out with part number 34011-96L00 and has gone through many updates with its part
number currently updating to 34011-96L44, The updates have added features and improved functionality. In
this course we will review the major updates to the 4-inch Suzuki Multifunction Gauge and get a better idea
of the compatibility of rigging parts, software and the engine to the gauge.

Introduction
 One Suzuki Multi-function Gauge (SMG)
includes all information on multiple analog
gauges, plus some information which is not
available on analog gauges.
 One multi-function gauge is used for each
engine.
 The multi-function gauge is compatible with
all 2015 and later DF9.9B to DF350A.
 Gauges and software are backwards
compatible but sometimes not the other
way. Therefore, it is important to match the
SMG4 to the engine and to NMEA 2000
accessories that are added.

4
Introduction
 The controls and main functions on all versions of the Suzuki Multi-Function
Gauge are shown in this introductory section.
 The MENU button switches over to the main screen or the previous screen
selected.
 The SET button switches the gauge screen or confirms a selection.

Introduction
 Main display items include:
 Engine speed.
 Ground/water speed.
 Engine position (PORT, STBD, CENTER).
 Caution indicator (icon).
 Shift position (F/N/R). Note that only the neutral position is
indicated on motors without a shift position sensor.
 Fuel remaining (2 tanks).
 Caution message.
 Clock.
 Troll mode indicator (TROLL).

6
Introduction
 The sub-information display can be changed by pressing the up and down
buttons:
 Total operating hours.
 Latitude and longitude.
 Fuel used (total).
 Fuel economy (average).
 Fuel economy (instantaneous).
 Instantaneous fuel flow.
 Battery voltage, coolant water temp.
 Trip time, distance.

7
Introduction
 Using the buttons, different configurations can be selected to match the operator’s
preference.
 Caution and malfunction information is shown when necessary.

8
Introduction
 Installation instructions are supplied in the package with each gauge.
 Installation instructions are also posted on SuzukiVision. Go to the Publications tab
and open either the set-up manual or rigging manual.
 To locate update software, go to the downloads section of SuzukiVision.

9
Introduction
 If not already pre-drilled by the boat manufacturer, lay out the gauge locations on
the instrument panel while making sure that there is sufficient clearance at the
back.
 Use a 3 3/8” hole saw.
 If more than one multi-function gauge, maintain a center to center distance of
120 mm.

 Install the seal to the gauge and place it into the drilled hole. Secure in place with
the resin nut.
 A cover for protection when not in use and an operators manual is supplied with the
gauge. Provide these items to the customer.

11
Introduction
 The wiring is basically the same for
mechanical and precision control models
other than the gauge adaptor. When using
the multi-function gauge on a mechanical
remote control model, the signal must be
changed from analog to digital at the
engine side.
 To accomplish this, connect gauge
connector A to SDS communication
connector B.
• If rigging a 2023 model year DF40A/50A/60A,
DF70A/90ª, DF115A/140A or
DF150A/175A/200A, the SDS connector can B
remain capped if using the remote control A
harness with CAN communication. Refer to

 The Suzuki Diagnostic System Mobile app has been developed. It works with SMG4 part number
34011-96L12 or higher.

 The first step is to download the free “Suzuki Diagnostic System Mobile” app to your
mobile phone.

 A quick method to obtain data is by pressing the UP and DOWN buttons at the same time
while in all mode display.

22
Update 34011-96L12
 Another method is to go to the Diagnosis menu, press SET to select Data Output and
SET again to select Create Data. You can also scroll to Log to obtain earlier saved data.
Up to 15 the latest data files are saved.

 The data for one engine is contained in three QR codes. If GPS is connected, the date
and time will be indicated in the data.

23
Update 34011-96L12
 If the boat is not at your dealership, you can arrange to have the customer download the
app and send the saved data to you for analysis.
 Once received, use SDS to study the ENC data contained in the 3 QR code files.
 Since customers do not have SDS, they can still view total operation hours from the last oil
change and usage hours at different engine speeds. The latest version app also has pre-
boating inspection and weather information.

increase or decrease engine speed.
 On dual mechanical control engines, troll mode must be set separately for each engine on
each engine’s gauge.
 As usual, to cancel troll mode, shift the remote control lever(s) to neutral or increase engine
speed above 3,000 r/min.
 Three new troll mode caution messages are available.

Troll mode cannot operate from this gauge. Check the activated
station by pressing “SELECT” button on the control panel, and
then re-operate.

the lowest position when the auto trim
mode is returned.
 When the engine speed is lowered by less
than 1,500 rpm when operating under 4300
rpm and the trim angle is operated to the
lowest position, circle “A” lights and it
returns to the auto trim mode. In this case,

Update 34011-96L40 – Primary Mode
 A Primary mode function has been added.
 In cases of multiple SMG4 and multiple engine installation on the boat, set the Primary mode to
the PORT side SMG4 and connect the NMEA line to that SMG4. When the Primary mode is set, the
data on CAN2 are aggregated in this SMG4 and distributed to other SMG4.
 When setting up a single engine, if the gauge setting is set to "CENTER" for the engine position
and "1st" for the gauge position, Primary mode is automatically turned on.

44
Update 34011-96L40 – Device List
 The Device List has two lists for CAN2 (Device List and External Device List).
 CAN2 Device List displays the internal devices and the External Device List displays the external
devices connected by the NMEA line. The CAN2 Device List is displayed on all SMG4 connected to
the gauge system.
 The Device List displays the part number of each device. P stands for primary mode and is
displayed to the left of the part number. The number on the right side indicates the position of
each device.

connected external device is not input to the gauge system and External devices are not
displayed in "External" Device List.
 If the SMG4 with Primary mode fails, the following symptoms occur in the gauge system:
 The signals of external devices connected by NMEA line do not enter. (Example : GPS module
signal cannot be input, and data such as speed, time, and latitude/longitude are not
displayed.)
 The external devices are not displayed in the External Device List.
 On the other SMG4 a caution "Check Primary Mode Setting" is displayed.
 Troll Mode is not available.

Update 34011-96L40 – Connections
 The gauge adaptor has been integrated into the late type (2022~) BCM harness for SPC models.
Since the SMG4 is connected directly to the BCM harness on SPC models, set-up is easier.

A gauge adaptor (36661-96L20) is

still required to install the SMG4 on
the 2021 or earlier model.

A gauge adaptor (36661-96L30) is

still required to install the SMG4 on
all mechanical control models.
