Gender Roles

In the beginning, about 14 million years ago, dryopithecus had similar traits to humans. Based

on the way they posture and ability to move the trees. Centuries after the dryopithecus was

extinct it was the evolution of Sivapithecus where human ancestors based on their jawbones and

dental and walk upright with feet on the surface. Afterwards they became Australopithecus also

known as southern ape. They were walking on two legs and their brains were significant. The

next generation of humans where Homo habilis increased their congestive ability. Then homo

erectus became the first relatives of modern day humans because of the way humans like

structures. Homo sapiens Neanderthalensis were the next generation of humans. The homo

sapiens were the evolution of humans and how we became how we live today. Their complex

societies, and efficient tool-making skills. Developed agriculture, industry, and civilization.

Throughout the years humankind people weren’t classified as men or women. Humans were

living life to survive, as the years went on the human race became more complex and evolved in

different roles and cultures. We have advances in technology that we created such as computers,

cars, medical equipment and other. In 1942 the ultrasound was first used to detect gallstones by

George Ludwig at MIT. Then as years went on Dr. lan Donald incorporated unfortunately into

the OB/GYN field of medicine. To determine whether the fetus was a male or female.

Gender is how you identify what your sex is. Gender includes the social, psychological,

cultural and behavioral aspects of being a woman or man or other gender identity. The word was

created from Middle English for the old French gendre or genre based on Latin genus birth

referring to kind or race. Gender is defined as a kind , sort or class referring to the common soft

of people. Gender roles or sex roles is the stereotype regarding attitudes, attributes, actions and

behaviors. These are certain characteristics traits that the opposite sex does have. It’s profiling an

individual into an category. Men are supposed to have a strong image and be ahead of a brand or

company. For example, “Men are much more prone to the fundamental attributes error. They’re

much more likely than women to believe that their success is because of their own doing and

failure is someone else’s fault. Women actually have a more accurate judgment of risk in this

particular way.” This demonstrates men have more confidence than women. Men don’t really

care about the risks and consequences when compared to women. Women tend to think about the

cost of being an entrepreneur or in most situations they are put in. Masculine in a traditional

sense with men and boys. It’s a mentality that men have, not physical strength. It’s the way men

construct themselves in society. On the other hand women are feminine. Females are naturally

soft spoken and sensitive. Women's appearances are more delicate and powerfully shaped.

Women are supposed to do the housework and be beautiful. Women aren’t allowed or supported

without the consent of man to do the things they want to do. For example “Recently, a woman

entrepreneur told our organization she was turned down by 22 banks and finally received a loan

from bank number 23. Only two bankers explained why she was denied, with one citing the need

for a husband to support the business and another suggesting she allow the bank to manage her

money and that she should get a traditional job.” Which means most women are discriminated

against because of their appearance. When it comes to women it’s not about their confidence. It’s
Peterson 3

about how we can handle our situation without being afraid of judgment from others. There's a

long line between men and women.

There are many events of men versus women throughout human history. In the year of

8151 Sojourner Truth delivered her “Ain’t I a Woman” speech. The historic impact of her speech

and actions towards equal rights on the U.S. In 1920 on August 18, after a 72 year long fight , the

19th Amendment finally passed, women's suffrage was ratified granting women the right to vote

in the U.S. Men were the first of everything such as president, voting, inventions. So it’s not

surprising that men were first by choice. In society and power men are always the number one

pick. It’s always one side against the other. Gender inequality is discrimination on the basis of

sex or gender causing one sex or gender to be routinely privileged or prioritized over another.

There are parts of the world there are not equal rights between men and women such as child

marriage, gender-based violence, child labor and unequal pay. In anything that men do women

have to work twice as much harder but women don’t get the credit or the benefit that men do. For

example “In private, for-profit companies, women earned an estimated 78 cents for every dollar

earned by men (a pay gap of 22 cents on the dollar). In government agencies and nonprofit

organizations, women earn an estimated 85 cents for every dollar earned by men (a pay gap of

15 cents on the dollar)”. This shows there is not much difference between the gap but it's a fact

that there has to be a gap between what men and women get paid. It’s not always fair for men.

Men who discriminate against men are dangerous around children. It’s masculine not for men to

nurture children. For example “Statistics shows that women win child custody rights a staggering

90% of the time, even though fathers play an important role in their children’s lives pre and post-

divorce”. This actively demonstrates that men are not looked at as an important factor in child

life without women. Men aren't capable of being considered nurturing or soft because they are
Peterson 4

masculine. There are many differences that men and women face in society and how it puts a

stereotype on how men or women are perceived. People make assumptions based upon

unconscious biases held by all of us.

Gender roles can impact socialization and society. Individual’s life choices such as one’s

chosen career; it can also impact the health and well-being of men and women. Gender

socialization is the process of teaching individuals how to behave according to gender roles.

Gender socialization starts in early childhood and how parents teach their children, learn in

school and what is seen in the media. They all have the importance of socialization in children's

lives. The most that has the most influence is the media in today's society. Where social media is

very exposed to different types of information that can affect children on their gender. Social

media created by men is targeting young women more than men. Women are generally seen as

objects of sex on social media platforms by choice or not. Women aren’t necessarily attracted to

men online by an object of sex but they are by choice. For example “Studies have indicated that

social media marketing is more effective when targeting women than men. This insight is

valuable for businesses and marketers seeking to maximize the benefits of social media

marketing”. This information describes how women are being used in a way they don’t

necessarily realize. But social media is a safe space for women to be women. It's a place to get

away from the negativity of masculine world. Social media is created for females and feels like a

feminist thing to do. Being born into something that doesn't belong is the odds. it's being

someone who is not , it’s not yourself. Transgender or nonbinary is a big step into people's lives.

According to the article The Experience, Challenges and Hopes of Transgender and Nonbinary

U.S Adults: “They way nonbinary people conceptualize their gender varies. Some said they feel

like they’re both man and woman and how much they feel like they are now or the other may
Peterson 5

change depending on the day or the circumstances. Others said they don’t feel like they are either

a man or woman or that they don't have gender at all. Some, but not all identified with the term

transgender”. This means that gender is anything upon how the person feels in their body.

In conclusion, Men, women, nonbinary or transgender is determines whether you feel

comfortable inside and outside. Gender is not a role that people play, it's just a category people

try to others in.
