ENCOUNTER THE PHENOMENON

Write the Encounter the Phenomenon question for this module.

Use the “What I Know” column to list the things you know about the Encounter the Phenomenon
question. Then list the questions you have about the Encounter the Phenomenon question in the
“What I Want to Find Out” column. As you read the module, fill in the “What I Learned” column.

6. Angular Velocity The Moon (r = 1.74 × 106 m) rotates once on its axis in 27.3 days.
a. What is the period of the c. A rock sits on the surface at
Moon’s rotation in seconds? the Moon’s equator. What is
its linear speed due to the
Moon’s rotation?

b. What is the frequency of the d. Compare this speed with the

Moon’s rotation in rad/s? speed of a person at Earth’s
equator due to Earth’s rotation.

8. Angular Acceleration In the spin cycle of a clothes washer, the drum turns at
635 rev/min. If the lid of the washer is opened, the motor is turned off. If the drum
requires 8.0 s to slow to a stop, what is the angular acceleration of the drum?

9. Angular Displacement Do all parts of the minute hand on a watch have the same angular
displacement? Do they move the same linear distance? Explain.

10. Critical Thinking An optical disc has a spiral track that starts 2.7 cm from the
center of the disc and ends 5.5 cm from the center. The disc drive must turn the disc
so that the linear velocity of the track is a constant 1.4 m/s. Find the following.

a. the angular velocity of the disc

(in rad/s and rev/min) for the start
of the track
b. the disc’s angular velocity at the
end of the track

c. the disc’s angular acceleration if

the disc is played for 76 min
