Q1). The potentiometer connected as a rheostat in Figure is used to

control the current to a heating element. When the rheostat is adjusted
to a value of 8Ω or less, the heating element can burn out. What is the
rated value of the fuse needed to protect the circuit if the voltage across
the heating element at the point of maximum current is 100 V and the
voltage across the rheostat is the difference between
the heating element voltage and the source voltage?

Q2). In Figure, indicate how to connect an

ammeter to measure the current from the voltage
source regardless of the switch position.

Q3). Answer the following questions

a) What is the primary difference in the energy band structure of conductors and semiconductors?
b) Explain how a 220 volt power supply is capable of running devices having power ratings 1500W, 2000W,
10W.
c) How many kilowatt-hours are used by a 250 W bulb burning for 8 h?
d) Convert 360,000 Ws to kilowatt-hours.
e) A certain battery delivers 10 A for 6 h. What is its Ah rating?
f) A circuit consumes 150W at a voltage of 30V. What is the current in the circuit?
g) If a circuit has a total power of 100W and a resistance of 25Ω, what is the voltage across it?
h) If the power consumed is 60W, what is the voltage if the current is 5A?
Q4). Figure is a graph of current verses voltage
for three resistances values. Determine R1, R2,
and R3.

Q5). A 120 V lamp-dimming circuit is controlled by a rheostat and protected from excessive current by a
2 A fuse. To what minimum resistance value can the rheostat be set without blowing the fuse? Assume a
lamp resistance of 15Ω. Repeat Problem for a 110 V circuit and a 1 A fuse. (5 marks)

Q6). Determine the color bands for each of the following 4 band, 5% values:
a) 330 Ω
b) 2.2 kΩ
c) 56 kΩ
d) 100 kΩ
e) 39 kΩ

Q7). In the light circuit of Figure, identify the faulty bulb based on the series of ohmmeter readings shown.
Q8). In this application, a resistive circuit is developed for controlling the speed of a small dc motor used
to drive a fan for cooling electronic equipment mounted in a cabinet. A circuit is required that will allow a
selection of four motor speeds. The control circuit is to be mounted in a small box that will be attached to
the equipment cabinet to control the fan motor speed, as shown in Figure.
The application requires four distinct switchable speeds. Your job is to develop a schematic, determine the
values for the required resistors, and prepare a test procedure for the circuit. You will apply Ohm’s law in
order to complete the assignment. Motor data in graphical form is provided in Figure.
Specifications
• Each resistor is switch selectable from a rotary switch, so that only one resistor is connected to the
motor at a time.
• The four approximate speed settings are 800 rpm, 600 rpm, 400 rpm, and 200 rpm.
• The motor is rated for a maximum of 12 V at 800 rpm.
• The circuit board is to be connected to a 12 V dc source and to the fan motor with wiring that is
available inside the cabinet.
Resistance Calculations
The resistor box has been prepared with speed-value labels and the PC board has been prepared as shown in
Figure. Use the graphical motor data in Figure and Ohm’s law to determine the nearest standard resistor
values needed for the project.
Q9). Determine whether the resistor in each circuit of Figure below has possibly been damaged
by overheating.

Q10). Calculate the missing parameter values in each of the following circuit diagrams.
