Child Labor in Haiti

Child labor in Haiti is a significant issue, affecting thousands of children across the country. Due to widespread poverty,
many families rely on their children to work and contribute to household income. These children often work in agriculture,
domestic service, and street vending. In rural areas, child labor is especially prevalent in farming, where children as young
as five are employed in arduous tasks such as planting and harvesting crops. This exploitation deprives them of education
and exposes them to hazardous working conditions.

In urban areas, many children are employed as domestic workers, commonly known as "restaveks." These children are
often sent by their impoverished families to live with wealthier families in the hope that they will receive better living
conditions and education. However, “restaveks” frequently suffer from abuse and neglect, working long hours without
pay and with little to no access to education. This practice perpetuates a cycle of poverty and illiteracy, trapping many
children in a life of servitude and limited opportunities.
Efforts to combat child labor in Haiti include government policies and international aid programs aimed at reducing
poverty and increasing access to education. Organizations like UNICEF and the International Labor Organization (ILO)
are working to provide support and resources to affected children and their families. Despite these efforts, significant
challenges remain, and a concerted effort is required to eradicate child labor and ensure that all children in Haiti have the
opportunity to enjoy a safe and education-filled childhood.
