pH Scale
pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a solution is.
The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14.
Acidic solutions have pH values below 7
A solution with a pH of 7 is neutral.
Pure water has a pH of 7.
Basic solutions have pH values above 7.
Manipulating pH
Algebraic manipulation of:
pH = - log [H3O+]
allows for:
[H3O+] = 10-pH
If pH is a measure of the hydronium ions
concentration then the same equations could be
used to describe the hydroxide (base)
concentration since [H+] = [OH-]
[OH-] = 10-pOH pOH = - log [OH-]
thus:
pH + pOH = 14 ; the entire pH range!
