SUCCEEDING

THROUGH INNOVATION

THE TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMME:

NOVEMBER 2004 COMPETITION FOR FUNDING
Optoelectronics
Optoelectronics and Disruptive and Disruptive
Electronic Technologies Electronic Technologies

Summary
Optoelectronics and emerging electronic technologies
have the potential to improve the productivity of
a wide variety of sectors and transform the way we
all live and work.
In recognition of this, an indicative £6M of DTI funding
has been allocated in this competition to support
Collaborative R&D projects that address the following
broad application areas:
medical and bio-photonics
high efficiency lasers, LEDs and novel light sources
for industrial applications and lighting
plastic electronics and displays
compound semiconductors for high frequency
electronics and optoelectronics

Background
Optoelectronics is concerned with the transmission
and manipulation of information and energy in
the form of light (photons) rather than electricity.
The technology underpins a very wide – and increasing
– range of applications and sectors. Similarly, new
electronic technologies are being developed which
have the potential to disrupt the world of silicon-based
microelectronics.
The application of optoelectronics and novel electronic
technologies can enhance the performance of a wide
range of products across industries such as transport,
lighting, security, communications and medicine. The
market for systems dependent on these technologies
is already over $150 billion. Some pundits predict this
figure will rise three-fold or more over the next decade
as they become all-pervasive.
The UK has significant strengths in these accessible to large, ‘conventional’ gas lasers
