Tag Questions

Tag questions (or question tags) turn a statement into a question. They are often used for checking
information that we think we know is true.

Here is a statement.

• It is cold today.

Here's the statement with its question tag.

• It's warm today, isn't it?

A question tag repeats the auxiliary verb and the subject pronoun. Usually positive statements have
negative question tags, and negative statements have positive question tags.

• She isn't German, is she? (Negative statement, positive question tag.)

If the statement has an auxiliary verb in it, you use the same verb in the tag question.

• He has eaten lunch, hasn’t he? (The auxiliary verb is ‘has’.)

If there is no auxiliary verb (in the present simple and past simple) use do / does / did (just like when
you make a normal question).

• She lives in Warsaw, doesn’t she?

• They went to the meeting, didn’t they?

There is one weird exception: the question tag after 'I am' is 'aren't I'!

• I’m hungry, aren’t I?
