A block of mass 12 kg resting on a rough horizontal surface is connected by a light


inextensible string which passes over a smooth pulley to another block of mass 8 kg.
The 8 kg block hangs vertically as shown in the diagram below.
The 12 kg block accelerates to the right at a CONSTANT VELOCITY.

3.1 Draw a labelled free-body diagram showing ALL the forces acting on the 12 kg
block. (4)

3.2 State Newton’s Third Law of motion in words. (2)

3.3 Calculate the:

3.3.1 Tension, T, in the string connecting the two blocks. (3)

3.3.2 Coefficient of kinetic friction between the surface of 12 kg and the table. (3)

3.4 If the string connecting the two blocks breaks, what will happen to the
acceleration of the 8 kg. Write down ONLY INCREASES, DECREASES OR
REMAIN SAME. (1)

Charge P carrying a charge of -4 nC and charge Q with a charge of +8 nC are placed


0,5 m apart as shown in the diagram below. The two charges are brought into contact
and separated back to their original positions.

pressure of four hydrides of group IV under the same conditions.
The following table shows results that were obtained during the investigation.

6.1 Define a covalent bond. (2)

6.2 Draw the Lewis structure of compound P. (2)

6.3 Molecule R (H2O) can form a dative (coordinate) covalent bond when it
reacts with hydrogen ion (H+).

when H2O reacts with the H+ ion. (1)

6.3.2 Which ONE of the two substances, T or S will be able to dissolve and
REACT with water? Give a reason for your answer. (2)

6.4 Electronegativity is a measure of the tendency of an atom in a molecule to


attract bonding electrons. Electronegativity values are useful in determining the
polarity of a chemical bond.

6.4.1 Calculate the electronegativity difference for the bond in the HF


molecule. (2)

An oxide of an element is a chemical compound of the element with one or more


oxygen atoms chemically bonded with at least one atom of the element. 4,6 g of an
oxide of nitrogen contains 3,2 g of oxygen

8.1 Define the term molar mass. (2)

8.2 Determine the empirical formula of this compound. (5)

8.3 Hydrates are compounds containing water molecules loosely bound to other
components. When a hydrated salt such as BaCl2 . xH2O is heated certain
amount of water is driven off.

8.3.1 If the percentage of water of crystallization in the hydrated salt is


17,308%, calculate the value of x in the given empirical formula of
the hydrated salt. (4)

8.3.2 Calculate the molar mass of the hydrated salt. (3)
