Similarities between Japanese and Tamizh- both languages use Onomatopoeia.

Tamil Japanese Meaning/ Remark


used to denote sound of the rain drops, as well as

Both languages follow SOV word order and have similar syntax.

Meaning : Nobody is there.


In the above example the particle “mo” in Japanese
யா ேம இல் ைல yaaru me illai தாேர ேமா னாய் Daare mo nai
corresponds to “me” or “um” in Tamil ( “me” is colloquial
form, pure word is “"yaarum illai” )

Even some words which have multiple meanings, mean the same in both languages.

க் மஸ் kikimasu ேகட் ம் , kettal means both hear and effective


ketkiradha ? kekudha? 聞こえますか?(kikoemasuka) English : Can you hear me ?
Intha marundhu kekudha? Or kekuma? Kono Kusuriha kikimasuka? English : Is this medicine effective ?

Questions end with a ka in Japanese and ‘a’ in Thamizh

Manai means house, So, wife in Tamizh literally means ‘one


who maintains the house ‘ or one who belongs to the house
மைன = மைன+ manaivi - manai +vi கனாய் Kanai
கனாய் Kanai - ka +nai - 家内 - Meaning the same , Ka -
house , nai - means inside.

The Japanese use similar expressions for expressing dismay or surprise
