LESSON

Lesson Overview

Sometimes when we hear the word marketing, we think about promotion or

maybe just advertisement, but the product is at the heart of the marketing mix. The
commodity determines what is to be priced, marketed, and distributed. If you can
develop and produce a product that gives your target consumer outstanding
value, the rest of the marketing mix is easier to handle. Good products make any
part of a marketer's job easier and more enjoyable.

Yes, you are right! These are some of the pandemic-inspired products and
services. A lot of products during COVID-19 will last far after the
pandemic subsides, including e-commerce, technology investments and even
working from home. Many products and services have been upended by
the coronavirus pandemic. Business owners and entrepreneurs across our
country are operating
from home instead of an office. The sanitation standards have steadily changed
in most industries and many other factors are changing the industry structure.

A "new normal" has been established for companies of all sizes in almost all
sectors, with improvements expected to continue long after COVID-19. The
pictures above are some of the goods and services that are expected to survive
longer than the coronavirus pandemic.

With the right goods and services, the business will still prosper amidst the
pandemic. So, let’s learn about what is a product,

What is Product?

A product is a set of attributes like features, functions, benefits, and uses that
a customer takes through an exchange. In general, the word "product" refers to
something sold by a business to please the consumer, whether tangible or intangible.
Therefore, the product may be an idea (e.g. recycling), a tangible good (e.g. a pair of
sneakers), a service (e.g. banking), or even some combination of all three.

In general, the product is also defined as "things produced by labor or effort"

or "outcome of an action or process." The word product is derived from the verb
produce, "the Latin word prōdūce(re)" (to) lead or bring forth. It refers to anything
that has been produced.

When it comes to marketing, a product is anything that could be offered

to the customer that might satisfy a desire or a need. In the retail sector,
products are called goods. Products are bought as raw materials in
manufacturing and sold as finished goods. Commodities are usually raw
materials such as metals and agricultural goods, but the word can also
pertain to everything widely available on the market place.
Product Classification: Tangible or Intangible

The product can be labeled as tangible or intangible. A tangible product

is a physical thing that can be sensed by touching a house, a car, or a device.
Most of the products are tangible things. A laptop, for example, is a physical
object.

An intangible product is a commodity that can only be viewed indirectly as

such health insurance. Intangible data items may also be categorized as virtual
digital goods, which are digitally stored on a device operating system and available
to users as standard file forms, such as JPG and MP3 files. An example of that
is the music you can download from Spotify and iTunes

Goods, Services, Ideas

Goods are a tangible commodity that can be shipped to the consumer

and require a transfer of ownership from the seller to the buyer.

The service is a non-material activity resulting in an observable change

of condition for the buyer created by the seller.

Ideas (intellectual property) are any intellectual invention that has

a commercial value but is offered or exchanged only as a concept, and not
as a subsequent service or good. This includes proprietary material, such as
literary or artistic works, and intellectual property, such as patents,
appellations of origin, business practices, and manufacturing processes.
Experience

Product experience is user experience. It reflects on the overall consumer

experience that occurs within the product itself. From the first time, a customer
bought or avail the product up to the after-sale. Anything that happens to the
product leads to the product experience.

So simply, it is the process of doing and seeing things or having things happen
to you with the product.

Why is Experience Important?

Insightful product experience is more relevant than ever. Terrible product

experience can scare consumers away or make them hate having to use a product to
complete a task. In the meantime, positive product experience increases use,
creates loyalty, and boosts ratings.

The Difference Between a Product, a Service, And an Experience

For example, you buy milk (product) fresh from the farm. Then the milk
delivers to your house by the milkman (service). The Milkman drives a small
truck, shaped like a cow and the children love that is (experience).
