 This paper contains two sections Section I and section II.
 Answer all questions in Section I and only five questions in section II.
 All working and answers must be written on the question paper in the spaces provided
below every question.
 Show all the steps in your calculation, giving your answers at each stage in the spaces
provided.
 Non programmable silent electronic calculators must not be used and KNEC
Mathematical tables may be used except where stated.

6. Solve the following simultaneous inequality hence state the range of x


x-2 < 2x + 1 < -5x – 3 ( 3 marks)

7. A two digit number is such that the difference between the ones digit and the tens
digit is 2. If the two digits are interchanged, the sum of the new and the original
number is 132. Find the original number. ( 3 marks)

8. Use reciprocal tables to work out ;

11. The sum of angles in a triangle is given by the expression ( 2a + b )0 while that of a
quadrilateral is given by (13 a – b )0 . Calculate the value of a and b. ( 3 marks)

12. A point X divides a line MN in the ratio 2:5. Given that M is ( -4, 10) and N ( 10, 3)
Find the co- ordinate of X. ( 3 marks)
13. Two men of equal height standing in opposite sides of a tower 40m high measures
the angles of elevation of the top as 320 and 200. How far apart are the two men?
( 4 marks)

14. The base areas of two cylindrical containers are 135cm2 and 240cm2 respectively.
a )Determine the area scale factor and linear scale factor. ( 2 marks)

b ) If the capacity of the smaller container is540cm3, what is the capacity of the
larger container in litres. ( 2 marks)

15. You are given that cos x = 8/10. Without using mathematical tables, Express its
function form the value of ;
a ) sin x ( 2 marks)

b) tan ( 90- x) ( 2marks)

16. Lengths of the minor and the length of the major arc of a circle are in the ratio 3:8.
Find the length of the major arc if the radius of the circle is 14cm. ( Take pie = 22/7)

17. A bus travelling at a speed of 80km/h left Nakuru for Nairobi at 8.00a.m. Two hours later,
A car travelling at a speed of 100km/h left Nairobi for Nakuru.
a) Given that distance between both cities is 500km, Find the time of the day
when the two vehicles met. ( 6 marks)

b) After meeting, the speed of both vehicles drooped to 60 km/h due to traffic
jam. At what time did each vehicle arrive at its destination? ( 4 marks)
18.a) Using a ruler and a pair of compasses only, construct triangle ABC in which
AB = 5 cm, BC= 5.9cm and < BAC = 450 ( 4 marks)

b ) Draw the in- circle of the triangle ABC and measure its radius. ( 4 marks)

c ) By taking AB as the base, find the area of the triangle ( 3 marks)


19. a)Complete the table below for the function y = 3+ 4x -x2 in the range -1 < x < 6 ( 2 marks)

b).On the grid provided, draw a graph of y = 3+ 4x – x2 in the range -1 < x < 6. Use a
scale of 2cm to represent 1 unit on the x- axis and 1 cm to represent 1 unit on

c). Use your graph to solve the equations.


i) 3+ 4x – x2 ( 1 mark)
ii) 3 + 4x – x2 = 4 ( 2 marks)

iii) 5 + 8x - 2x2 ( 3 marks)


20. The following table below shows weight in kgs of 400 pieces of wood.

21. The figure below shows a uniform cross section of a swimming pool which is 4 m
wide. The depth of the pool increases gently from 1.5m to 3 m.

22. Two lines L1 ; 2Y - 3X – 6 =0, L2 ; 3Y + X - 20 = 0 intersect at a point B.
a ) Find the co- ordinate of B ( 3 marks)

b ) A third line L3 is perpendicular to L2 at point B. Find the equation of L3 in the


form y = mx + c where m and c are constants. ( 3 marks)

c ) Another line L4 is parallel to L1 and passes through ( -1, 3). Find the x – intercept
and x – intercept of L4. ( 4 marks)
23. The figure below is a solid frustrum of a rectangular based pyramid. AB= 12cm,
BC = 10 cm, EF = 5cm, FG = 6 cm, FB= 8 cm and a vertical height 6 cm.

a) Determine the vertical height of the pyramid from which the frustrum was cut.

b) Calculate the volume of the frustrum. ( 4 marks)

c) Calculate the surface area of the frustrum. ( 4 marks)


24. Three points P, Q and R are vertices of a triangular plane field. P is 400m from Q on a
bearing of 3000 and R is 550m directly south of P.
Using a scale of 1cm to represent 100m, on the ground, Draw a diagram to show the positions
of the points. ( 3 marks)

b) Use the scale drawing to determine .


i) The distance and bearing of Q from R ( 2 marks)

ii)The bearing and distance of S from P given that S is directly 600m East of R( 3 marks)

ii) The bearing and distance of Q from S ( 2 marks)
