IC Voltage Regulators
• A Voltage Regulator is a circuit that supplies a constant
voltage regardless of changes in loading currents for
powering other electronic circuits.
• They are available in integrated circuit form and are widely
used.
• These are generally three terminal devices that provide a
positive or negative output.
• Some types have variable voltage outputs.
• A typical 7800 series voltage regulator is used for positive
voltages.
• The 7900 series are negative voltage regulators.
• These voltage regulators when used with heatsinks can safely
produce current values of 1A and greater.
VOLTAGE REGULATORS
Fixed Voltage Regulator
Example: 7805,7905
Switching Regulator
Example:IC723
88
FIXED VOLTAGE REGULATOR
It is used for generating a fixed voltage. It is of two types
Fixed-Positive Voltage Regulator
Fixed-Negative Voltage Regulator
Fixed-Positive Voltage Regulator
The series 78XX regulators are the three-terminal devices that
provide a fixed positive output voltage without connecting any
external components .
FIXED POSITIVE VOLTAGE REGULATOR
• The dropout voltage(Vout-Vin)
should be typically
2V.(Example for 7812 input
has to be minimum 14 V)
• Capacitor Ci is needed if the
input signal is located at a
appreciable distance from
IC.
• Capacitor C0 is needed to
improve transient response
which is optional.
• 78XX can be used as a
current source.

Positive-Voltage Regulators in the 78XX Series
92
FIXED NEGATIVE VOLTAGE
REGULATOR
• The series 79XX regulators are the three-terminal IC
regulators that provide a fixed negative output voltage.
• This series has the same features and characteristics as the
series 78XX regulators except the pin numbers are different.
FIXED NEGATIVE VOLTAGE
REGULATOR
Negative-Voltage Regulators in the 79XX Series

ADJUSTABLE VOLTAGE
REGULATOR
Benefits:
• Improved System Performance
• Improved overload protection
• Improved system reliability.
Adjustable Positive Voltage Regulator:
• The LM317 is an example of an adjustable-Positive voltage
regulator, can be operated over the range of voltage from 1.2
to 37 V. It has three terminals VIN, VOUT, Adjustment.
ADJUSTABLE POSITIVE VOLTAGE
REGULATOR
• LM317 develops a nominal voltage 1.25V
referred to as the reference voltage VREF
between the output and adjustment terminal.
• This reference voltage is impressed across R1
since the voltage is constant, the current I1 is
also constant. Here Resistor R1 is called as
current set or program resistor because it sets
current I1.
97
ADJUSTABLE POSITIVE VOLTAGE
REGULATOR
98
ADJUSTABLE NEGATIVE VOLTAGE
REGULATOR
• The LM337 is an example of an
adjustable-Negative voltage regulator, can be
operated over the range of voltage from -1.2
to -37 V. It has three terminals VIN, VOUT,
Adjustment.
99
SWITCHING REGULATOR
• By using IC723 we can get both positive and negative voltage.
