ICU INTERVIEW
REFLECTION

Google meet with Nurse Cristina, a NICU nurse, and Nurse Glenn, a PICU nurse.

ICU nursing is a critical and highly specialized field within healthcare, requiring a unique
blend of clinical expertise, rapid decision-making, and compassionate care. Upon interviewing, I
realized that being an ICU nurse is not just being a nurse in any other ward, it requires dedication
and conviction.

Ate Cristy's experience of being a NICU nurse and Ate Glenn's experience of being a
PICU nurse expanded my view to the wide and diverse scope of nursing. Given that the patients
they're handling, babies and children, requires specific, meticulous and complex needs more than
adults, adds more complexity to the workload of being an ICU nurse. ICU nurses work in high-
stakes environments, often responsible for the most vulnerable and critically ill patients, from
trauma victims to those recovering from major surgeries. Their role goes beyond simply
administering medications or monitoring vital signs; they are the lifeline in emergencies,
providing emotional support to patients and families, and often acting as advocates for patients
who cannot speak for themselves.
When they mentioned about the most common cases in the ICU they encountered which
are premature babies and those children with respiratory issues, I realize the need for more
research into why premature babies and pediatric patients most commonly experience respiratory
distress in the ICU. It is crucial due to the high vulnerability of these populations and the
complex nature of their conditions. Premature babies often have underdeveloped lungs,
particularly those born before 34 weeks, which puts them at higher risk for conditions like
Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) due to insufficient surfactant production. While medical
advances have improved outcomes, the underlying mechanisms leading to respiratory issues in
both premature and pediatric patients are still not fully understood, requiring further exploration.
Additionally, pediatric patients may experience respiratory distress from a range of causes, such
as congenital anomalies, infections, or genetic disorders, each of which might have distinct
physiological triggers that need targeted interventions.

They mentioned about the understaffing Jeddah also experienced. At first, I was really
shocked by the truth of it. That even though nurses from the Philippines migrate to other
countries most often than any other nurses of race, there’s still an understaffing problem
anywhere in the corner of the world. I realized that this indispensable profession faces a global
shortage, reaching countries our interviewers are working at, Jeddah, and the situation is
particularly dire in countries like the Philippines. Nurses in the Philippines are known for their
dedication, skill, and resilience, yet they often work under challenging conditions due to staffing
shortages. Many ICU nurses are overworked, leading to burnout, and some seek opportunities
abroad, where pay and working conditions are more favorable. This exodus exacerbates the
shortage at home, creating a vicious cycle. Addressing this crisis is crucial, not just for the health
of patients but for the sustainability of healthcare systems worldwide.
