Expressing habit
We can express past habit in three ways:
Used + to infinitive
Would + infinitive
Simple past tense
1. I (live/ used to lived) in Surabaya.
2. He (used to/ used to be) a Boyscout.
3. When I was a child, my father ( would read/ read) me a story at night before
bed.
4. Ravi (playing/ used to play) inline skates.
5. Alifa ( often play/ would often play) with dolls.
Gerund and gerund phrases
1. (Play/ playing) football is fun.
2. (Walking/ walked) is good exercise.
3. (making/ make) a time capsule with your family can be fun.
4. Most evenings are spent (chat/chatting) with my parents, (watch/ watching)
television or (listen/listening) to music.
5. We usually (shop/shopping) at a nearby music store and we often go (shop/
shopping) for the latest CDs.
6. Rocks can be (collecting/collected) anywhere. Although not very suitable for
very young children or old people, rock (collecting/ collected) can be a
fulfilling leasure activity.
