explain how it contributed to the decline of the Byzantine Empire in 2-3 sentences.

Question: What were the biggest causes of the decline of the Byzantine Empire?
1. The crusades
When the Byzantine found out about Alexius' deal with the crusaders they killed him. The

Overall winner and your explanation:
Even though the Ottomans directly led to the end of the Byzantine empire, the Crusades are
the winner. The Crusades damaged the Byzantines economy, political stability, and military
strength which significantly weakened the Byzantine Empire. The Crusades paved the way
for the Ottomans to conquer the empire. They caused the Byzantines to be more vulnerable
to attacks, caused economic damage, and captured Constantinople destroying part of the
city. The crusades played a very important and significant role in the downfall of the
Byzantine and further weakened the empire allowing the Ottomans to conquer.
