MATH 12550.00 - Week 4 - Recitation - Graphing Polynomials using the Linear

Factorization Theorem

1. Identify the degree, end behavior and roots (with multiplicities) of the following polynomials.

(a) f (x) = x3 (x + 1)2 (x2 + 9)(x2 − 4)

(b) f (x) = 4x(x2 − 9)3 (x2 − 2)(x + 6)7

2. Use the following information to write out the polynomial functions in factored form. Sketch
a graph.

(a) Degree: 3; has roots: -2,1 (multiplicity 2); leading coefficient: 2

(b) Degree: 4; has roots 1 − i, -3,0; leading coefficient: -1

3. Match the polynomial functions to the graphs below, (a is a positive constant).

(I) f (x) = −a(x − 3)2 (x + 2)4

(II) f (x) = a(x + 2)3 (x − 2)(x − 4)
(III) f (x) = −a(x − 1)3 (x + 4)(x − 6)
(IV) f (x) = a(x2 − 1)(x2 − 9)
(V) f (x) = ax2 (x + 5)(x + 3)(x − 2)
(VI) f (x) = a(x2 + 1)(x − 2)(x − 4)
