Acids and Bases

Title: Acid-base titration

Aim: _________________

Apparatus: 25.0 cm3 pipette, burette, 250 cm3 conical flask, retort stand with clamp,
white tile
Materials: 0.1 mol dm3 sulphuric acid, , approximately 0.2 mol dm-3
potassium hydroxide, KOH solution, phenolphthalein
Procedure:
1. Rinse a clean burette with a small amount of 0.1 mol dm-3 sulphuric acid,
.Clamp the burette on a retort stand
2. Fill the burette with 0.1 mol dm-3 sulphuric acid, .Adjust the meniscus
level of the acid to a reading at `0’ or slightly below the ‘0` mark.
3. Record the initial burette reading.
4. Pipette 25.0cm3 of potassium hydroxide, KOH solution into a conical flask
5. Add two drops of phenolphthalein into the potassium hydroxide, KOH solution
and shake it well. Observe the colour of the solution.
6. Place the conical flask with its contents on a white tile below the burette as shown
7. Add the sulphuric acid, carefully and slowly from the burette into the
conical flask.Swirl the conical flask throughout the process of titration.
8. When the colour of the mixture turn paler, add the sulphuric acid, a drop
at a time while swirling the flask. Observe carefully the change in colour of the
mixture.
9. Stop adding the sulphuric acid, as soon as the solution in the conical flask
turn colourless.(This is the end point)
10. Record the final burette reading.
11. Repeat steps 1 to 10 twice.Tabulate your readings.

Method:
1. …….
2. ………..
3. ……….
.
Result:
Titration number 1 2 3
Final burette reading cm3
Initial burette reading, cm3
Volume of sulphuric acid,
cm3

*Find average
Calculation:
1. What is the volume of 0.1 mol dm-3 sulphuric acid, required to exactly
3
neutralize 25.0 cm of potassium hydroxide, KOH solution?
2. Calculate the concentration of potassium hydroxide, KOH solution, in g dm-3,
based on the result obtained ( Relative atomic mass: H,1;O,16;K,39)

Discussions:
1. What is the colour of phenolphthalein in potassium hydroxide,KOH solution?
2. Why do you need to rinse the burette with a small amount of sulphuric acid,
in step 1?
3. What is the use of the white tile in this activity?
4. State the change in colour at the end point if methyl orange is used to replace
phenolphthalein in this activity
