The Notting Hill Carnival has been taking place on the last weekend of August for more than 50 years. This jolly multi-
cultural festival was brought to London by immigrants from the West Indies, particularly from the island of Trinidad, where
the carnival tradition is very strong. But these immigrants never imagined that it would become one of the biggest carnivals
in Europe and one of London’s most popular tourist attractions.
When slavery ended in 1833 in Trinidad, the slaves celebrated their freedom by singing and dancing in the streets. They
used their artistic skills to create fantastic costumes and masks which made fun of their former masters. Gradually, people
from all over Trinidad began to take part in these street celebrations. They became experts in the art of costume making and
the skills of “calypso” (story telling in song). It was the start of a tradition that would never die out.
Thousands of people from Trinidad and other West Indian countries emigrated to Britain to work in the 1950s and 60s.
Many of them settled in London’s Notting Hill area. Remembering their carnivals back home, they dreamed of creating a
festival to bring together the people of Notting Hill. In 1964, the first street carnival was organised, with just a few people
dressed in costumes, and a steel band. As they had hoped, when the people of Notting Hill heard the first tunes of the band,
they came out onto the streets to join in.
As well as the traditional costume parades and live bands, there are also dozens of “Static Sound Systems” with huge loud
speakers as tall as people pumping out music on every corner. They all have their own DJs, playing a selection of reggae,
jazz, soul and many other styles of music. The Sound Systems became so successful with the under-20s that they instantly
turned into a carnival institution.
