Engineering Mechanics: Unit 1

AMRITA SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING, BENGALURU

ENGINEERING MECHANICS-19MEE 111
ASSIGNMENT -1 (Resultant and Resolution of coplanar forces on particles)

Ans: 113.3, 357.2N

1.1.1
1.1.2 Forces F1 and F2 act on a bracket as shown. Determine their resultant.
Ans: R =185.3 N,
αR =67o
Ans: R =163.4 N

1.1.3 The guy cables AB and AC are attached to the top of the transmission tower. The tension
in cable AC is 8 kN. Determine the required tension T in cable AB such that the net effect
of the two cable tensions is a downward force at poinr A. Determine the magnitude R of
this downward force.

Ans: R =10.21 kN, T=5.68 kN

1.1.4 To steady a sign as it is being lowered; two cables are attached to the sign at A. a)
Knowing that α=250, determine, the required magnitude of force P if the resultant R of the
two forces applied at A to be vertical and the corresponding magnitude of R.

Ans: 489N, 738N

Engineering Mechanics: Unit 1

1.1.5 An elastic band is grasped and then is stretched as shown. Known that the tensions in
portions BC and DE of the band are 80 N and 60 N, respectively, determine the required
angle α (inclination of band BC with the vertical) if the resultant R of the two forces
exerted on the hand at A is to be vertical and the corresponding magnitude of R

Ans: 138.4N, 7.480

1.1.6 Determine the resultant of the forces as shown in the figures below. α = 350 for the fig 7
Ans: 65.2kN, 58.20

Ans: 379kN, 31.40

Ans: 1007N, 4.910

1.2 Problems on Non-orthogonal resolution of Forces

1.2.1 Determine the magnitudes F1 and F2 of the components of force F with magnitude F =
5 kN in the directions f1 and f2 (Ans: F1 =3.7k N, F2 =2.6 kN)

Ans: F1 =3.7k N,
F2 =2.6 kN

1.2.2 The 250N force is to be resolved into components along lines a-a’ and b-b’. determine
(a) the angle  knowing that the component along a-a’ is 175N, (b) the corresponding
value of the component along b-b’?

2
Engineering Mechanics: Unit 1

Ans: 113.3, 357.2N

1.2.3 Determine the components of the 2 kN force along the oblique axes a and b.
Determine the projections of F onto a and b axes.

Ans: Fa=0.598 kN, Fb=1.633 kN,

Pa=1.414kN, Pb =1.932kN

=1.932kN
