Title: Measurement of Inductance and Capacitance using LCR-Q Metre.

Objective: To measure the inductance (L) and capacitance (C) of given inductors
and capacitors using an LCR-Q metre and understand its working principles.

Relevant PO’S:-
PO 1. Basic and Discipline Specific Knowledge: Apply knowledge of basic
mathematics, sciences and engineering fundamentals with electrical engineering
specialisation to solve the engineering problems.
PO 4. Engineering tools, Experimentation and Testing: Apply modern engineering

Relevant CO’S:-
CO3 - Suggest suitable electronic components for given mechanical engineering
application.
.
Apparatus Required:
● LCR-Q metre
● Inductors of known and unknown values
● Capacitors of known and unknown values
● Connecting probes

Theory:

An LCR-Q metre is an instrument used to measure the inductance (L), capacitance

(C), resistance (R), and quality factor (Q) of electronic components. It works by
applying an AC signal to the component and measuring its impedance, from which L,
C, R, and Q can be derived.

● Inductance (L): A property of an inductor that causes it to oppose a change

in current. It is measured in henries (H).
● Capacitance (C): A property of a capacitor that enables it to store charge. It
is measured in farads (F).
● Quality Factor (Q): The ratio of reactive power to resistive power in an AC
circuit. It indicates the efficiency of an inductor or capacitor.

Procedure:

Part A: Measurement of Inductance using LCR-Q Meter

1. Objective: To measure the inductance of a given inductor using the LCR-Q

metre.
Steps:
○ Switch on the LCR-Q metre and allow it to stabilise.
○ Select the L (inductance) mode on the LCR-Q meter.
○ Connect the terminals of the inductor to the LCR-Q meter using the
appropriate probes.
○ Note the inductance value displayed on the screen.
○ Record the inductance value in henries (H).
○ Repeat the process for different inductors.

Part B: Measurement of Capacitance using LCR-Q Metre

1. Objective: To measure the capacitance of a given capacitor using the LCR-Q

meter.
Steps:
1. Select the C (capacitance) mode on the LCR-Q meter.
2. Connect the terminals of the capacitor to the LCR-Q meter using the
appropriate probes.
3. Note the capacitance value displayed on the screen.
4. Record the capacitance value in farads (F).
5. Repeat the process for different capacitors.
