Method Statement for Trenching Works

1. Scope of Work

This method statement outlines the process for trenching works, including site preparation,
excavation, shoring, backfilling, and compaction. The objective is to ensure safe and efficient
trenching operations while adhering to project specifications and safety standards.

2. Responsibilities

 Project Manager: Oversees overall progress and ensures resources are available.

 Site Engineer: Supervises trenching activities and ensures compliance with specifications.

 HSE Officer: Monitors safety measures and ensures adherence to protocols.

 Foreman: Directs laborers and equipment operators on-site.

 Surveyor: Sets out trench alignment, depth, and gradient as per design.

3. Materials and Equipment

 Excavators, backhoes, and trenching machines.

 Shoring materials (steel plates, timber, or trench boxes).

 Surveying instruments (levels, total stations).

 Warning tapes and barricades.

 Backfill material: Sand, gravel, or soil as specified.

 Compaction equipment (plate compactors, rollers).

4. Procedure

4.1 Pre-Trenching Preparations

1. Review project drawings and specifications for trench dimensions and alignment.

2. Obtain necessary permits and approvals before commencing work.

3. Conduct a site survey to identify existing utilities and potential obstructions.

4. Mark the trench alignment using stakes and lines.

5. Notify relevant authorities and utility companies of planned excavation.

4.2 Safety Precautions

1. Ensure all workers wear PPE (helmets, gloves, high-visibility vests, and safety boots).

2. Provide training on trench safety, including recognition of hazards like cave-ins.

3. Install barriers, warning signs, and safety tapes around the trenching area.
4. Ensure proper ventilation in case of deep trenches or confined spaces.

4.3 Excavation

1. Use suitable excavation equipment to dig along the marked alignment.

2. Maintain the specified depth, width, and gradient, as indicated in the drawings.

3. Stockpile excavated material at a safe distance (at least 1 meter from the edge).

4. Regularly inspect the trench walls for signs of instability.

4.4 Shoring and Stabilization

1. Install shoring or trench boxes in trenches deeper than 1.5 meters or as required.

2. Use appropriate methods for stabilization based on soil conditions (e.g., sloping or
benching).

3. Inspect shoring systems daily and after heavy rains or vibrations.

4.5 Utility Installation (if applicable)

1. Place pipes, cables, or other utilities as per design.

2. Ensure proper bedding material and alignment during installation.

3. Conduct inspections or tests (e.g., pressure tests for pipelines) before backfilling.

4.6 Backfilling

1. Place backfill material in layers (maximum 300 mm thick) and compact each layer.

2. Use specified materials for backfilling, such as sand or granular material.

3. Remove temporary shoring or trench boxes progressively during backfilling.

4. Ensure compaction achieves the required density (tested as per specifications).

4.7 Restoration

1. Restore the surface to its original condition or as per project requirements (e.g., asphalt,
concrete, or landscaping).

2. Remove surplus materials and dispose of them responsibly.

5. Quality Control

1. Verify trench alignment, depth, and gradient through regular surveying.

2. Inspect shoring systems for compliance with safety standards.

3. Conduct compaction tests on backfilled material to ensure specified density is achieved.

4. Record and document all inspections and tests.

6. Health and Safety

1. Conduct a risk assessment before starting trenching activities.

2. Monitor for hazardous gases or oxygen deficiency in deep trenches.

3. Provide adequate access (e.g., ladders) for personnel in trenches.

4. Prohibit workers from entering trenches without proper protective systems in place.

5. Stop work during adverse weather conditions (e.g., heavy rain or high winds).

7. Environmental Considerations

1. Prevent runoff from entering the trench by creating diversion channels.

2. Dispose of surplus excavated material and debris at approved locations.

3. Minimize noise and dust by using well-maintained equipment and water sprays.

4. Avoid contamination of nearby water bodies or land during excavation and backfilling.

8. References

 Project Specifications and Drawings.

 Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standards for Excavation (29 CFR
1926 Subpart P).

 Local regulations and codes of practice.

9. Attachments

1. Risk Assessment Report.

2. Inspection and Test Plan (ITP).

3. Trench Shoring Layout.

4. Material Test Certificates.

This method statement ensures trenching is conducted in a safe, efficient, and compliant manner
while minimizing risks to workers and the environment.
