What is MLA style?

MLA Citations Practice Name: ____________________________________

And why do I need to use it?

MLA is short for the Modern Language Association. MLA style is “a system for documenting
sources in scholarly writing” (“MLA Style”).

Using a specific style and format for academic papers ensures consistency and uniformity.
MLA style is just one type, often used for English, literature, and humanities papers; other
styles include APA (American Psychological Association), Chicago, and Turabian.

Why Document Sources?

Writers document sources for several reasons: to establish credibility on the topic, to ensure
research on the topic has been done, to show respect for other writers and creators, to enable
the reader to further investigate the topic, and to maintain academic integrity by not
plagiarizing others’ ideas and work. The consequences for plagiarism can be severe. Many
colleges expel students for plagiarism, businesses may terminate employees for it, and it can
cause great embarrassment for public figures when they fail to give credit to their sources.

What does MLA Style Offer Writers?

MLA style provides writers guidance on how to document and format the following:

1. Attributions within the paper (signal phrases, in-

text citations, parenthetical citations).

2. Works-cited page (bibliography).

3. Style for typing the paper (this includes general

guidelines on font size, spacing, margins, headers,
title, section headings, use of italics and
quotations, and endnotes).

CORE ELEMENTS of MLA Style

The principle behind MLA style is to provide references which contain “core elements” about
the source, making it easier for the reader to find the source (“What’s New in the Eighth
Edition”). The first two–and most important–elements answer the questions “Who?” (author or
creator of source) and “What?” (title of source).

While not every source will provide ALL nine elements, writers should find and document as
much as they can about the source, adding validity to the research.

The following page shows a chart with the nine core elements writers should seek in a source.
