JANMAR R.

CORRAL BSA-2A MOD-7 ETHICS WEEK 16

4. Does utilitarianism questions individual rights? What if violating the civil rights of a minority
increases the sum total of pleasure of the majority?

Utilitarianism raises concerns regarding individual rights since it stresses overall happiness or pleasure
over individual liberties or rights. In situations where breaking a minority's civil rights increases the total
amount of pleasure for the majority, a precise utilitarian calculus may justify such actions. However, this
method poses serious ethical questions about using people as mere means to an aim, and it ignores the
necessity of safeguarding fundamental rights and freedoms. Critics contend that a system that sacrifices
individual rights for the larger good endangers the foundations of justice and morality, ultimately
weakening the same ideas that utilitarianism wants to promote: the well-being and happiness of all
people.

5. Do you agree that happiness is the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain, and that all
actions are directed toward pleasure?

Pleasure is certainly a part of happiness, but it is not the entire picture. We engage in many behaviors
that do not provide instant satisfaction, like assisting others or working toward long-term goals. Even if
these acts are uncomfortable, they can provide a greater sense of joy and contentment. Furthermore,
some sorts of pleasure, for example engaging in unhealthy behaviors, can have severe repercussions.
True happiness is likely to involve a balance of pursuing delight and striving toward meaningful goals,
even if they cost some sacrifice.

6. Are all pleasures comparable, even objectionable pleasures? What if the majority derives
pleasure from being sexist?

All pleasures cannot be directly compared. They meet various needs. However, we can assess joys
according to their impact. Pleasures that bring harm to oneself or others, such as sexism, are often
deemed "objectionable." The majority taking enjoyment in something harmful, such as sexism does not
make it right. Popularity is not equivalent to morality. Imagine a civilization that values gladiatorial
fighting. Though many people find pleasure, we acknowledge the inherent cruelty. Similarly, sexist
behavior may be popular in a certain group, but it objectifies and damages others, making it a lesser type
of enjoyment in the larger picture.
