1.The story is written in a manner that it makes it difficult to point out clearly if Sophie
met Danny Casey or not. Suggest possible reasons for such writing
Ans. No, Sophie had not met Danny Casey in reality. One day, while drawing Geoff’s
attention, Sophie narrated an imaginary story about accidentally ,meeting Danny Casey at
the Royce’s. Geoff, however, refused to believe her. So, she describes Danny Casey’s
physical appearance to make her ⁃ brother believe her story. She told Geoff that she was also
willing to get an autograph for little Derek, but she did not have a pen or a paper for the same.
Then, Sophie claimed that the two of them talked about clothes at Royce’s. She ended her
story by saying that Danny has promised to meet her again. Such writings are an escape
route from the daily chaos of life or to attract somebody’s attention. The reality was that she
had never met Danny, she had only seen him live once, playing a match.
2.“Sophie felt a tightening in her throat. She went to look for her brother Geoff.” In the
light of this quote, discuss the relationship Sophie shared with Geoff.
Ans. Sophie loved her brother Geoff more than anybody else in the world. She could tell him
her innermost thoughts and he would listen to her without interrupting. He never seemed to
dismiss her thoughts as mere flights of fantasy. He was a reticent person and would never
speak too much. Words were to be prized out from his mouth like stones from the ground.
She grew jealous of his silence since she thought he was living in a different world. She was
upset since she couldn’t be a part of it. She doted on Geoff and had a lot of faith in him.
Sophie often dreamt of riding behind her brother to some mystical place wearing fancy
clothes where people would welcome them, She always wanted his attention, Geoff was the
one who warned her that Danny Casey may have a string of girls and she may be one of them.
Geoff was a pillar of support to her. He symbolised a world of fantasies Sophie could escape
to.
3.Sophie is caught between the world she lives in and the world she wants to live in.
Elucidate.
Ans. Sophie is a school going girl. She lives in a dreamy world which has distant relation with
the harsh realities of life. She dreams of big and beautiful things beyond her reach or her
means. She thinks of having a boutique. Then she entertains the Idea of being an actress.
She can be a fashion designer too. Here she is poles apart from her classmate and friend
Jansie. Jansie is realistic and practical. She knows that both of them have been earmarked
for the biscuit factory.
Sophie’s romantic and dreamy disposition leads her to hero-worship. The hero of her
dreams is the young Irish wonder-footballer Danny Casey. She has developed a romantic
fascination for him. Even Geoff cautions her that Casey is a celebrity. Many girls like her must
run after him. But she is an incurable dreamer. She thinks of him all the time. She Sits for
hours imagining Danny Casey coming to her. She knows that he will never come. She
becomes sad but helpless. She lives with all her dreams and disappointments. They are not
real. They are all the creations of her mind.
4. Evaluate the two different perspectives to life that Jansie and Sophie represent.
Ans. Sophie and Jansie were classmates and friends. Both of them belonged to mediocre
families. Yet Sophie was much more ambitious than Jansie. Sophie told Jansie that she is
going to have a boutique. Jansie, who is more practical and realistic, tells Sophie that a lot of
money is required to have a boutique. Sophie says that she will find the money. Then Jansie
tells her that it takes a long time to save that much of money. Then Sophie says that to begin
with, she will be a manager till she has got enough money. Jansie tries to make Sophie
understand that they will not make Sophie a manager straight Off. Sophie still says that she
will have the most wonderful shop in the city. So, Sophie besides being impractical had a
wavering mind also. Jansie felt sad thinking that both of them are most likely to work in the
biscuit factory after school. Jansie also tries to make Sophie understand that she should be
sensible as they do not pay well for shop work. Sophie insisted that she would become an
actress and have a boutique beside that. She said that she might be a fashion designer. Thus
we find that Sophie is over- ambitious, impractical and rather a day dreamer. But, on the
other hand, Jansie is more practical and has firm mind.
Ans. Jansie was a practical girl who was grounded in reality. Since both Jansie and Sophie
belonged to a lower socio-economic background, Jansie understood that they were both
earmarked for the biscuit factory. She understood that the dreams that Sophie had, required
a lot of money and were not achievable, she was so critical of Sophie.
6. What was showpiece ambition in life how did she hope to achieve that?
Ans. Sophie’s ambition in life was either to become an actress, a fashion designer or a
boutique owner. She wanted to become rich and sophisticated. She hoped to earn money
by becoming a manager or a fashion designer or working part-time as an actress.
8.Every teenager must dream big. Yet the dream should also be rooted to the ground.
Write a character sketch of Sophie in the light of this aspect.
Ans. Sophie is an escapist. She is a typical adolescent who indulges in fantasy, ignoring her
ground realities. As seen at the start of the story, she ignores her reality of working in the
biscuit factory and instead, aspires to open the best boutique of the city. Her choices are
manager, actress, and fashion designer. She has not seen the world but tries to get a glimpse
of it from Geoff. Sometimes she wishes that he would take her out with him as she was ready
for the vast world Sophie liked to daydream about Danny Casey She could not draw the fine
line between reality and dreams. She believed her own fantasies to be true and waited for
Danny at the park. When she realised that he would not come, she turned disappointed and
felt a burden.
