2023 DEVELOPMENTS

Price continues to drive dynamic value growth of fruits

In 2022, fruit prices experienced significant growth, due to rising transportation costs and
reduced output, while the weather was also not favourable for fruits towards the end of the
review period due to cold and rainy weather in the spring and high temperatures and drought
during the summer, impacting production output of some fruits. The rising average unit price
trend continues in 2023, driven by growth in the retail channel. The fruits with the most
significant price increases are primarily apples, and oranges, tangerines, and mandarins. These
fruits also hold considerable share in China, contributing to the overall increase in the category’s
average unit price.
In terms of volumes, the reduced time consumers are spending at home in 2023 has resulted
in a marginal decline via retail compared to the previous year, but overall demand remains
above pre-pandemic levels. When looking at individual varieties, the prices of cherries in 2023
have experienced a significant drop due to ample import supply and reduced shipping costs,
resulting in double-digit retail volume growth. While the average unit price of bananas and pears
has somewhat stabilised following a surge in 2022, retail demand is weakening as they cost
considerably more compared to pre-pandemic levels. On the other hand, total demand for
lemons and limes has recovered, following a positive performance by retail during the
pandemic, especially as there was another wave of COVID-19 infections at the end of 2022.
Many local consumers believe that lemons, rich in vitamin C, can help to swiftly recover from the
effects of COVID-19, or other seasonal viruses.

Shenzhen pagoda industrial (group) corporation limited

On 16 January 2023, Shenzhen Pagoda Industrial (Group) Corporation Limited (02411.HK)
made its debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Founded in 2001, Pagoda follows a
franchise model and currently operates over 5,000 bricks-and-mortar stores, with the majority
being franchise outlets. When measured by the number of stores and revenue, Pagoda stands
as the largest fruit retailer in China.
Pagoda has introduced a proprietary fruit grading system that evaluates fruits based on
factors such as sweetness, freshness, crispness, tenderness, and safety. This system classifies
fruits into four levels: Signature, A, B, and C, each corresponding to different price points. The
fruit grading system pioneered by Pagoda has inspired other retailers to adopt similar practices.
For instance, Dingdong has also implemented a grading system for its fruits. Pagoda's chain-
based business model is expected to continue to gain market share from traditional fruit retailers
in the future.

PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Fruits increasingly leans towards premiumisation

Fruits in China are increasingly leaning towards premiumisation. This shift is primarily being
driven by three factors. The first is increasing imports. These include perennial favourites such
as durian, cherries, and mangosteen, as well as the rising popularity of niche varieties such as
longan and rambutan from Thailand. The second factor is the cultivation of new varieties of
popular fruits; the well-established Fuji apple variety has a long history in China, but it has
gradually lost its novelty for local consumers. In response, new apple varieties, such as Venus
Gold and Ruixue, have emerged. Similarly, grapes now feature varieties such as Sunshine
Rose. The third factor is boosting the production of niche fruits such as passion fruit,
blueberries, and loquats, to include new varieties such as golden passion fruit and kiwi berries.
These innovations aim to provide consumers with unique and exotic fruit options.
E-commerce retailers are taking premiumisation a step further by making more niche fruits
available. Retailers such as Freshippo and Pagoda have invested in their own fruit farms to
ensure the supply of niche fruits such as apricots and crispy persimmon, which were previously
only seen in particular regions due to the limitation of product output and difficulty of
transportation. For example, Freshippo has a growing number of fruit SKUs from its farms in
Xinjiang and Yunnan provinces. The two provinces are well-known for their high-quality fruits,
which were not often seen in inland markets.

Consumption of blueberries set to continue growing, supported by

domestic production
Retail volume sales of blueberries in China have been experiencing rapid growth, primarily
due to the high-speed expansion of domestically-grown varieties. The latter have far surpassed
imported blueberries, accounting for a significant portion of blueberry consumption in the
country. The leading brand for packaged blueberries is currently Driscoll’s, with other brands
including Joyvio and Dole, among others.
The primary blueberry-producing region in China is Yunnan, with additional regions such as
Changbai Mountain and the Liao Dong Peninsula also engaging in blueberry cultivation. Given
the relatively high economic returns from blueberry cultivation, it is expected that China's
blueberry production will continue to grow in the future.
As per capita blueberry consumption remains relatively low in China, making it a relatively
new fruit variety for consumers, the rising demand for blueberries is predicted to persist in the
future.
