System Engineering

System engineering is developed by combining knowledge of various fields of

computer engineering and science. It focuses on the planning and development of complex

systems to make them cost-effective and less time-consuming. Several theories or principles

in systems engineering need to be applied when creating a project. The first principle is to

define the problem before creating a solution. Several times teams start the project with a

solution without analyzing the problem thoroughly. This may lead to missing information

which will affect the outcome of the system. The second principle is to involve the

stakeholders from the beginning of the project to receive early feedback and avoid the

chances of mistakes (Boehm et al, 2012). The third principle is to break down the system or

project into smaller parts which makes it easier to complete. The final principle is to make

sure the entire process is traceable and every step is connected.

There is a pre-defined process of system engineering to apply these principles which

has five major steps. The first step is to analyze all the inputs such as the customer's needs

and requirements. The second step is to analyze the requirements according to the customer's

needs to help the team come up with ideas for the system. The third step is to plan the

important work and estimate the costs that are required for the process of systems

engineering. The fourth step is to break down the system into smaller parts to make the

process easier. The final step is to design the physical outline of the system including the

design and making sure that each process can be traced back to the requirements.

The application of system engineering in businesses and projects is not widely used.

So the process of system engineering should only be used on a business project when needed.

Some questions also arise with these discussions. What limitations are there in applying

system engineering in the Business process? How to measure the effectiveness of system

engineering in business processes?
