It first published
in 1915. The genre of this novel is classic fiction, telling the story about the tragic life of a salesman
named Gregor Samsa.
(Recon) This novel tells the life of Gregor Samsa who worked as a salesman and has been the
backbone of the family since his father could not work and had a lot of debt. Gregor also had to bear
the burden of his sick mother and his younger sister, Grete, who was only 17 years old. Gregor
always tried to work hard to provide for their need. One day, when he woke up, Gregor suddenly
became a cockroach. This caused problems because Gregor could no longer work. He had been fired,
then his family isolated him by locking him in his room. Every day only Grete came into his room to
feed him. Because Gregor couldn't work, this forced his father and mother to work. One day Gregor
managed to get out of his room. But this shocked his mother and made his father angry, so Gregor
had an apple thrown at him by his father. The throw caused Gregor to be injured and caused an
infection. Since then his family has paid less and less attention to him and had not even given him
food. In the end Gregor died. After that his family moved to another place and lived a better life.
(Evaluation) This is a good novel and has life values that need to be pondered. Gregor's inability to
work has forced his family to undertake efforts that were initially thought impossible. So nothing is
impossible if we are willing to try. Apart from that, Gregor's family also did not appreciate Gregor's
sacrifice so far, so at that time Gregor was ostracized and did not want to communicate with Gregor,
in the end Gregor died in loneliness.
(Evaluation summation) Overall, this novel is good for all ages, but it may be difficult for children to
understand so it must be retold in simpler language. Even though the story has a tragic ending, the
values related to family can be used.
